The National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Iran was the body responsible for administrating the Bahá’í Faith in Iran.
The Islamic Revolution of Iran which began in 1979 resulted in an intensification of persecution of the Bahá’í community in Iran and many members of the National Spiritual Assembly were abducted and martyred. The body was dissolved in 1983 due to government restrictions.
History[edit]
A precursor body known as the Central Assembly had administrated the Faith in Iran from 1922 however it was not a properly constituted National Spiritual Assembly due to the community being unable to follow the procedures Shoghi Effendi outlined for National Assemblies throughout the 1920's.[1]
In 1927 the first National Convention with representatives from across Iran was held to elect the national body, and from 1928 the body was referred to as the National Spiritual Assembly of Persia. In 1934 Shoghi Effendi had the Assembly send instructions to the Bahá'ís of Iran to elect ninety-five delegates representing all regions of the country,[2] and he recorded 1934 as the year the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran was officially established.[3]
The 1979 Revolution in Iran resulted in intense persecution of the Bahá’ís in the country and actions taken against the National Spiritual Assembly itself included the seizure of all assets of the Nawnahálán Company, the financial arm of the Assembly, in February, 1979,[4] and the Umaná Company through which the Assembly maintained ownership of Bahá’í properties in March, 1979.[5] The membership of the Assembly was abducted in August 1980 following the revolution in Iran, presumed kidnapped and murdered, and a new Assembly was elected.[6] Eight of nine members of the re-elected Assembly were executed without trial in December 1981.[7]
The National Spiritual Assembly of Iran was officially disbanded in August 1983 when the Attorney General of Iran declared Bahá'í administration illegal.[8] While the Faith was not permitted to form administrative institutions as a result the government of Iran did approve the Bahá’í community establishing an ad hoc committee known as the Yárán.[9]
