Dr. ‘Izzatu’lláh Furúhí (December 31, 1934 - December 27, 1981) was a Persian Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran. He was martyred for his beliefs following the Revolution.
Biography[edit]
Dr. Furúhí was born in 1934 in Boroujen in the Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province of Iran. He completed his early schooling in Boroujen then moved to Tehran where he completed High School, then Isfahan where he completed a medical degree at Isfahan University.[1]
After completing his studies Furúhí completed his compulsory military service and he was stationed in many cities across Iran during his two years of service. After completing his military service he settled in Isfahan for two years then moved to Tehran where he was appointed an Associate Professor at the Medical College. He later became the head of an Anaesthesiology Department at a large hospital serving in the role until 1978 when he was dismissed because he was a Bahá’í.[1]
Throughout his life Furúhí was an active Bahá’í and he occasionally visited Africa on travel teaching trips. In 1979 he was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member in Iran and in 1980 he was elected to the Local Spiritual Assembly of Tehran. During 1980 the membership of the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran was abducted, presumed martyred, and when the body was re-established Furúhí was elected to it.[1]
On December 13, 1981, eight members of the National Spiritual Assembly were arrested during an Assembly meeting, including Furúhí, and they were martyred by firing squad on December 27, 1981. His body was not returned to his family.[1]
