Jahángír Hidáyatí (September 8, 1923 - May 15, 1984) was a Persian Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran.
Biography[edit]
Hidáyatí was born in Adilabad, Yazd, in 1923. After completing his schooling he moved to Tehran where he became a qualified technician at the College of Engineering and he then began working for the Ministry of Roads.[1]
Hidáyatí became successful in his professional career completing a Master of Science in Civil Engineering at Tehran University and being employed by the Department of Civil Aviation working on the construction of several airports. His utilized his expertise in engineering to serve the Bahá’í Faith serving as a director of the Umaná Company which managed Bahá’í properties in Iran. In 1982 Hidáyatí was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran when the body was reformed after its members were martyred.[1]
The Assembly was disbanded in 1983 when the government of Iran outlawed Bahá’í Administration. On June 30, 1983, he was abducted and imprisoned in Evin prison. It was not until July 19 that his family learnt of his whereabouts by which time he had been transferred to Gohardasht. He was denied any contact with his family until Naw-Ruz 1984 when he was permitted to make a short phone call to them. On May 20, 1984, his wife was granted permission to visit him however he had already been martyred on May 15. His body was not released to his family and other prisoners reported he had been severely tortured before his martyrdom.[1]
