Sháhpúr Markazí (1929 - September 23, 1984) was a Persian Bahá’í who served as a National Spiritual Assembly and Auxiliary Board member in Iran. He was martyred for his beliefs following the Revolution in Iran.
Biography[edit]
Markazí was born in Hamadan in 1929. His family moved to Tehran in 1934 and he was raised there. After completing his school education he pioneered to Bahrain for seven years.[1]
After returning to Iran Markazí secured a position working for the Institute of Irrigation and he lived in several cities while working for the body. He was also an active member of the Bahá’í community and was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member.[1]
In 1982 Markazí was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran when the body was reformed following the arrest and execution of the previous membership of the body. The Assembly was disbanded the following year when the Iranian government criminalized Bahá’í Administration and Markazí was arrested in September 1983 and imprisoned in Evin prison.[1]
While in Evin prison Markazí was severely tortured being blinded in one eye and having several ribs broken. He was martyred on September 23, 1984, in Tehran and the authorities did not release his body to his family.[1]
