The Yárán, meaning Friends, was an ad hoc committee established in 1984 to see to the social and spiritual needs of Bahá’ís in Iran following the disbandment of the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran.
History[edit]
In 1983 the Attorney-General of Iran declared Bahá'í administration illegal and in accordance with the law the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran disbanded. The Bahá’ís received approval to establish the Yárán in 1984 which was an informal ad hoc committee responsible for tending to the spiritual and social needs of Bahá’ís in the country.[1] It initially consisted of three members,[2] and the Iranian authorities were made aware of the groups activities and responsibilities to the Bahá’í community.[3]
On October 21, 1987, agents of Iran's Ministry of Intelligence raided a meeting of the Yárán being held in a Bahá’í residence in Tehran. The three members of the committee and two other Bahá’ís present were arrested despite the agents not having a warrant. They were held in solitary confinement until being released on bail on December 17 the same year. In July 1992 Hasan Mahboubi, a member of the committee, was hit by a car in a hit and run incident which was regarded as suspicious and passed as a result of his injuries.[4]
As of 2008 the Yárán had expanded to seven members however that year the membership were arrested with the government declaring the group was illegal. It was disbanded in accordance with the ruling and the membership were sentenced to twenty years in prison.[1] The members were released in 2018 however in July 2022 two former members were arrested and sentenced to another ten years imprisonment.[5]
