Ardishihr Akhtari (1937 - September 28, 1987) was a Persian Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran. He was martyred in the wake of the 1979 Revolution in Iran.
Background[edit]
Akhtari was born in Tabriz in 1937. His father passed away in 1952 and he left school to work securing a job with an insurance company.[1]
In 1980 he was fired from his insurance company position due to being a Bahá’í. He was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran after the majority of members of the body were martyred by the new regime in 1981 however the body was dissolved at the order of the Attorney General of Iran in 1983.[1]
On September 11, 1984, Akhtari and his fellow former National Spiritual Assembly member, Amir-Husayn Nadiri, were arrested due to being Bahá’ís and imprisoned. On September 28, 1987, they were both executed in Tehran. Their possessions were returned to their families however their bodies were never recovered.[1]
