Farid Behmardi (1939 - June 10, 1986) was a Persian Bahá’í who served as a National Spiritual Assembly and Auxiliary Board member in Iran. He was martyred for his beliefs following the Revolution in Iran.
Biography[edit]
Behmardi was born in Tiberias, Israel, in 1939 and was the fourth child in his family. In his youth his family moved to Yazd, Iran, where he completed High School and began working for the National Bank. He had an interest in music and was fluent in English which later prompted him to establish his own business which imported musical instruments to Iran.[1] At some point he settled in Tehran.[2]
While living in Tehran Behmardi was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member. He was later elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran after the membership of the Assembly was abducted in 1980, and new members were then arrested and martyred in 1981. He served on the body until 1983 when the government made Bahá’í Administration illegal.[2]
On July 30, 1984, Behmardi was arrested and held in Evin prison where he was severely tortured and placed in solitary confinement for nine months. He was taken out of the prison and taken to his home to assist the authorities in searching for documents and neighbors observed that he had been tortured.[2]
On June 10, 1986, Behmardi was executed by hanging in Tehran. His body was not returned to his family.[2]
