Events[edit]

  • 1844: Two hours and eleven minutes after sunset, the Báb makes His declaration to Mullá Ḥusayn and reveals the first chapter of the Qayyúmu'l-Asmá' (Commentary on the Súrih of Joseph). The end of the Adamic Cycle of 6,000 years and the beginning of the Bahá'í Cycle; the beginning of the Heroic Age.
  • 1896: Prince Hisam us-Saltanih Qájár visits Ábádih and interviews one of three Bahá’ís who are unjustly imprisoned there. He rules that the Bahá’ís should be freed, although they are made to pay a fine. Immediately after he departs, local authorities order the three released Bahá’ís be arrested again and that Bahá’í homes be attacked.[1]
  • 1912: ‘Abdu’l-Bahá travels to Boston, arriving the same day.[2]
  • 1944: The Centenary of the Declaration of the Báb is celebrated in the Holy Land, and at the House of the Báb in Shíráz; ninety delegates to the Iranian national convention and members of the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran assemble discreetly for the latter. The end of the celebrations marking this occasion signal the end of the First Epoch of the Formative Age.
  • 1948: The first Bahá’í European Conference is held in Geneva.[3]
  • 1955: The dome of the National Bahá’í Centre in Tihrán is demolished with the personal participation of several high-ranking army officers. The publication of the pictures of this episode encourages a widespread outburst of persecution of Bahá’ís throughout Iran.
  • 1962: Charley Roberts becomes the first member of the Athabascan peoples north of the Arctic Circle to become a Bahá’í.[4]
  • 1994: The first Bahá'í Youth Conference of Martinique is held in Fort-de-France.[5]
  • 1983: United States President Ronald Reagan issues a statement condemning the repression of the Iranian Bahá'í community.[6]
  • 1999: Sang Correa, a well-known Gambian boxer who is a Bahá’í, marries Elizabeth Mendy in Lamin which is the first Bahá’í wedding in that region of Gambia.[7]
  • 2001: At dusk, the Terraces of the Shrine of the Báb are officially opened in a special ceremony attended by some 3,000 Bahá’ís and over 600 guests, marking the completion of the projects on Mount Carmel.[8]
  • 2016: Ground is broken for the construction of the local Bahá'í House of Worship for Norte del Cauca, Colombia.[9]
  • 2017: Ahmed Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, highlights the resemblance of recent persecution of Bahá’ís in Yemen to that of the Bahá’ís in Iran, stating: “The recent escalation in the persistent pattern of persecution of the Bahá’í community in Sana’a mirrors the persecution suffered by the Bahá’ís living in Iran.”[10][11]
