1844 was a leap year of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year of the Julian calendar, the 1844th year of the Common Era (CE), the 44th year of the 19th century, and the 5th year of the 1840s decade. As of the start of 1844, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1844 corresponds to the start of the Bahá'í Era according to the Badi calendar; Naw-Rúz of this year corresponds to the first day of the year 1 BE.

  • Beginning of the First Epoch of the Heroic Age of the Bahá’í Faith.
  • January 22: Mullá Husayn returns to Karbalá from Isfahan, he encourages the Shaykhís to disperse and search for the Promised One as Siyyid Kázim had instructed them to and leaves Karbalá.
  • March: Mullá Husayn sets out for Persia after a forty day period of mourning and fasting for Siyyid Kázim at a Mosque near Najaf.
  • May 23: The Báb declares His mission to Mullá Ḥusayn in Shiraz, Persia, founding the Bábí Faith.
  • July 2: Mullá `Alíy-i-Bastámí recognizes Báb forty days after He Declared His mission to Mullá Husayn. Sixteen others recognize the Báb shortly after him, and they are named Letters of the Living along with Mullá Ḥusayn.
  • July/August: Mullá Ḥusayn travels to Tihran via Isfahán, where he presents a Tablet revealed by the Báb to Bahá’u’lláh. He proclaims the Báb's mission in Khurásán after leaving Tihran.
  • August 11: Mullá `Alíy-i-Bastámí is sent to proclaim the Báb's mission in Najaf and Karbalá. He is arrested and imprisoned in Baghdád.
  • September 10: The Báb leaves Shiraz to set out on His pilgrimage to Mecca after receiving a letter from Mullá Ḥusayn detailing his meeting with Bahá’u’lláh.[1]
  • September 19: The Báb arrives in Bushihr.[1]
  • October 2: The Báb sets sail from Bushihr.[1]
  • December 12: The Báb arrives in Mecca and performs the Muslim Pilgrimage rites.
  • December 20: The Báb publicly proclaims His mission at the Kaaba.
  • December 24: The Báb completes His pilgrimage in Mecca.[1]
