Mas‘úd Khamsí (1922 - March 5, 2013) was a Persian Bahá’í who pioneered to South America where he served in several administrative capacities. He was ultimately appointed to the International Teaching Center serving two terms.
Biography[edit]
Khamsí was born into a Bahá’í family in 1922 and his father was Siyyid Ahmad Khamsi-Báqirof. He lived in Iran until 1957 when he pioneered to South America to assist in achieving one of the goals of the Ten Year Crusade, and assisted in the establishment of the Local Spiritual Assembly of La Paz, Bolivia, serving as an inaugural member when it was established in 1960.[1]
Khamsí served on the joint National Spiritual Assembly of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay from 1960 to 1961, and was elected as the inaugural Chairman of the independent National Spiritual Assembly of Bolivia when it was established in 1961.[2][3][4] In 1962 he was appointed an Auxiliary Board Member for Protection for the Western Hemisphere, succeeding Mildred Mottahedeh,[5] and in 1963 he participated in the first election of the Universal House of Justice as a delegate from Bolivia and spoke at the First Bahá’í World Congress during a session on pioneering.[6]
In 1963 Khamsí returned to Iran,[7] where he embarked on a successful business career working for his brother-in-law Habib Sabet and was also active in Bahá’í service being appointed to a committee aiming to teach the Faith to English speakers by the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran.[8] He was appointed as an inaugural Counselor for West Asia in 1968,[9] however he was dissatisfied by life in Iran and returned to South America in 1969, settling in Peru. He was appointed as a Counselor for South America after moving.[10] He traveled across South America extensively in his role as Counselor, and accompanied Rúḥíyyih Khánum on the Green Light Expedition, a lengthy teaching tour of South America undertaken by boat in 1975.[11] He was appointed the Trustee of the Continental Funds of South America in 1976.[12]
In 1983 Khamsí was appointed to the International Teaching Center for a five year term. In 1985 he, and Ruth Pringle, accompanied Rúḥíyyih Khánum to a meeting with Panama's Minister of Government and Minister of Justice to discuss the construction of a radio station by the countries National Spiritual Assembly.[13] He was reappointed to the Teaching Center for a second five year term in 1988, and retired from the body in 1993.[14][15] He returned to Peru after the end of his service on the International Teaching Center and passed away there in 2013.[16]
