Kiser Barnes (b. January 13, 1943) is an American Bahá’í who lived in Nigeria where he served as a National Spiritual Assembly and Auxiliary Board member and a Continental Counselor. He later served as a member of International Teaching Center and Universal House of Justice in the Holy Land.

Biography

Barnes was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States in 1943. In his youth he completed a Bachelor of Arts in political science at Morgan State University graduating in 1965, and then undertook a Juris Doctor's degree in law at the University of Maryland graduating in 1974. He then practiced law in Maryland.[1]

Barnes pioneered to Benin in the mid-1970's and in 1977 he was elected to the country's National Spiritual Assembly. In 1980 he became a Senior Lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University Faculty of Law teaching Law of Business Associations, Law of Contracts, and International Economic Law. In addition to teaching at the University he also undertook a Masters Degree in the Philosophy of Law graduating in 1984.[1]

In 1981 Barnes was appointed to the Auxiliary Board for Africa as a Board member for propagation and his area of jurisdiction was Nigeria. He served as Board member until being appointed as a Continental Counselor for Africa in 1990. He retired from his University position in 1993 as he was appointed to the International Teaching Center and moved to Haifa, Israel, in order to serve on the body and in 2000 he was elected to the Universal House of Justice in a by-election held due to the passing of Adib Taherzadeh.[1]

In November 2012 it was announced that Barnes was retiring from the Universal House of Justice with the body's approval and he completed his term in 2013.[2]
