WikiProject Chronology is a coordinated effort to create and maintain quality articles on the chronology of the Bahá'í Faith on Bahaipedia and related projects.
Scope[edit]
This WikiProject concerns itself with the creation and maintenance of Bahaipedia articles related to days of the year, months, years, various calendars and their features (especially the Gregorian and Badi calendars), and important dates in the history of the Bahá’í Faith. The articles with which this project deals should all be included in the Category:Chronology or one of its subcategories.
Since the focus of Bahaipedia is on the Bahá’í Faith, it is reasonable to limit the scope of stand-alone chronological articles to periods of time surrounding the Bahá’í Era.
Cut-off for earliest dates[edit]
The cut-off used on navigational templates such as {{Year nav}} is 1750, the start of the decade in which Shaykh Ahmad was born. The rationale is that, since Shaykh Ahmad is considered the earliest figure having direct relevance to Bahá’í history, it is unlikely that Bahaipedia will need individual articles for any years prior. Similarly, it is unlikely that the project will need individual articles for decades or centuries earlier than the 1750s or the 18th century, respectively.
It is, of course, entirely appropriate to refer to time periods earlier than these in articles related to history; we simply recommend against creating individual articles or adding wikilinks for these periods. As an example, an early revision of the article on the Ottoman Empire read (including wikilinks):
Founded by ‘Uthmán (Osman I) in the late 13th century, the Ottoman Empire lasted around 600 years, becoming one of the world's greatest powers during the 15th and 16th centuries. [...] Despite attempts at reform, the empire lost significant amounts of territory during the 18th and early 19th centuries, and events such as the Young Turks' rebellion and World War I eventually led to the empire's dissolution.
Notably, mentions of the 13th, 15th, and 16th centuries are not wikilinked, whereas mentions of the 18th and 19th centuries are linked.
Finally, historical events prior to 1750 are best addressed as part of articles about the parties to these events, except in cases where they are clearly notable (e.g., being directly mentioned by the Central Figures of the Bahá’í Faith). To continue the previous example, it would not be appropriate to create individual articles about battles fought by the Ottoman Empire during its early history; these could potentially be included in Ottoman Empire, depending on their notability. On the other hand, an article about the Hijra (the flight of Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, a highly significant event in Islamic history) would be appropriate as the event was mentioned by the Central Figures of the Bahá’í Faith.
Goals[edit]
To create, expand, and maintain articles related to different years, months, days, dates, and calendars. This will specifically include those articles contained within the Category:Chronology, and generally include any article related to days of the week, months of the year, different years themselves, and various calendars and their use in Bahá'í chronology.
Article style[edit]
Time periods[edit]
Bahaipedia contains a number of articles for days, months, years, and longer time periods in both the Gregorian and Badi calendars. The main purpose of these articles is to regroup information about events that took place in each of these time periods.
For instance, the article on 1957 contains information about various events during that year, including details about the passing of Shoghi Effendi, the establishment of the institution of the Custodians, and the first Conclave of the Hands of the Cause of God; the establishment of new institutions; births and deaths of notable Bahá’ís; and the publication of new books.
Contents[edit]
Here is a general guideline on what kinds of information should be included in articles on various time periods:
- Centuries/Kull-i-Shay’s: General information about worldwide historical processes or movements characterizing the century; overall, large-scale evolution of the Bahá’í Faith; ages and epochs of the Faith and of the Divine Plan.
- Decades/Váḥids: General information about social processes or movements characterizing the decade; Middle-scale evolution of the Bahá’í Faith, including teaching and administrative development; individual plans within the ages and epochs of the Faith and of the Divine Plan.
- Years: Individual events taking place during the year, including establishments and firsts, births and deaths of notable Bahá’ís, and publications.
- Months: Recurring events (observances and regular gatherings); Most significant historical events and anniversaries during the month. These can be transcluded from Bahaipedia:Today in History.
- Days: Observances; All historical events and anniversaries on the day.
Templates[edit]
Articles on time periods should begin with a template which provides standard information about that period, including conversions between Gregorian and Badi calendars. These templates include {{Day}} and {{Badi day header}} for days, and {{Gregorian year header}} and {{Badi year header}} for years.
Articles on years and longer time periods should have navbox templates in the lead section of the article, such as {{Year nav}}, {{Badi year nav}}, {{Decadebox}}, or {{Centurybox}}. For day and month articles, footers should include an appropriate navbox template such as {{Gregorian}} or {{Badi}}.
Wikilinking dates[edit]
In general, wikilinks to time period articles should follow standard style for wikilinks; that is, the first mention of a particular period in a particular section should be wikilinked, and further mentions should not.
Article leads[edit]
In article leads, the first mention of every time period which has an article should be wikilinked. This includes days, months, years, and longer time periods. This applies regardless of the article's topic. Per the above guidelines on scope, time periods which are out-of-scope (i.e. before the year 1750) should not be linked.
Infoboxes[edit]
In infoboxes, every mention of a time period that has an article should be wikilinked. Some infoboxes may automatically produce wikilinks for years.
Article bodies[edit]
- Articles on time periods
- In articles that cover time periods, time periods such as years, months, and days of the month should be wikilinked throughout the body of the article as follows:
- The first mention of a particular time period in each section should be wikilinked. Thus, if two events happened on January 3 of the same year, the first mention of January 3 should be linked, but not the second one.
- If the same date is mentioned in two separate sections, the first mention in each section should be linked.
- Other articles
- In articles on any other topic, time periods should not be linked in the main body of the article unless they bear particular relevance to the topic at hand.
- For instance, if a biographical article contains a section on all of the activities of its subject in the year 1963—e.g. if that year was a particularly significant one in the subject's life—then the year may be linked. However, if dates are mentioned in passing in a section that gives a broad overview of the subject's life and achievements, dates should not be linked.
