Events[edit]

  • February: Representatives of the National Spiritual Assemblies of Canada, France, Germany, the UK, and the USA, meet with representatives of the Bahá’í International Community in Geneva to consult on the external affairs work of the Faith.[1]
  • February: The Bahá’í community of Bristol hosts a celebration of the 75th Anniversary of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá visiting the city which is attended by 260 people.[2]
  • April 9: The 75th Anniversary of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's visit to Stuttgart, Germany, is commemorated in the city with Rúḥíyyih Khánum delivering a talk to 1,200 people.[2]
  • April 9 - 17: The Bahá’í community of Budapest, Hungary, celebrates the 75th Anniversary of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá visiting the city.[3]
  • April 16: The 75th Anniversary of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's visit to Vienna, Austria, is celebrated in the city with Rúḥíyyih Khánum attending the event.[3]
  • April 29 - May 2: The Sixth International Convention takes place at the Bahá'í World Center to elect the Universal House of Justice. New members elected are Hooper Dunbar and Adib Taherzadeh.
    • Concurrent with the International Convention is a conference on Ḥuqúqu’lláh called by ‘Alí-Muḥammad Varqá.[4]
  • June: The Legislative Council of Hong Kong passes an ordinance granting the National Spiritual Assembly of Hong Kong new legal status.[5]
  • June 30: The Anniversary of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's visit to London is commemorated in the city and marked with the inaugural presentation of a Human Rights Award.[3]
  • September: The Bahá’í community of Nigeria is granted permission to oversee Bahá’í marriages.[6]
  • November 18 - 20: The Bahá’í community of Maldonado organizes a series of events to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Bahá’í Faith in Uruguay.[7]
  • December: Sean Hinton pioneers to Mongolia opening the country to the Faith.[8]
  • December 25 - 28: A Pan-European meeting of representatives from nineteen countries is held to facilitate consultation on developing the Bahá’í Faith in Europe.[9]
  • December 30: An External Affairs Conference begins at the Bahá’í World Centre lasting through to January 1, 1989.[10]
