1849 was a common year of the Gregorian calendar and a common year of the Julian calendar, the 1849th year of the Common Era (CE), the 49th year of the 19th century, and the 10th and last year of the 1840s decade. As of the start of 1849, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1849 corresponds to the years 5–6 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.

Events[edit]

  • Bahá’u’lláh marries Fátimih in Tihrán.
  • January: Three thousand Royal troops are sent to the village of Vás-Kas near the Shrine of Shaykh Tabarsí to continue the siege of the Bábís residing in a Fort built around the Shrine, which had begun the previous year.
  • January 11: Quddús and Mullá Husayn lead two hundred and two Bábís in an attack on the Royal troops encampment and disperse their forces.
  • January 27: The royal troops receive reinforcements, and cut off the water supply to Fort Tabarsí. Mullá Husayn had a well dug, and a bathhouse constructed.
  • February 1: The well within the vicinity of the shrine is completed, and Mullá Husayn performs his ablutions and wears a turban belonging to the Báb that had been sent to him. He is killed the next day while leading a charge against the royal troops which succeeded in routing the royal troops.
  • March 1: A commander of the royal troops learns that Mullá Husayn has been killed through an informant, and leads an unsuccessful assault on the Fort.
  • March 27: The royal troops build fortifications around the Fort and begin bombarding it. Some of these fortifications were destroyed by a group of nineteen led by Mírzá Muhammad-Báqir a few days later.
  • April 26: A reinforced royal force attacks the Shrine, but is repelled by a group of thirty-seven Bábís.
  • May 9: An emissary of the royal troops arranges for the a meeting between their Commander and Bábí leaders, and Quddús enters to the royal camp. It is agreed that the Bábís will be allowed to go free if they surrender.
  • May 10: Battle of Fort Tabarsí ends with the Bábís surrendering. The agreement is broken and many of the Bábís are killed after surrendering.[1].
  • November 26: The Báb sends Mullá Ádí-Guzal to make pilgrimage to the graves of Mullá Ḥusayn and Quddús.

  • February 2: Mullá Ḥusayn, First Letter of the Living. He was killed during the battle of Fort Tabarsí and buried near the Shrine of Shaykh Tabarsí.
  • May 16: Quddús, Last Letter of the Living. He was tortured and executed by his captors in Bárfurúsh after the Battle of Fort Tabarsí
  • May: Mírzá Muhammad Hasan Bushrú’í, Letter of the Living and younger brother of Mullá Ḥusayn, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • May: Mírzá Muhammad Báqir Bushrú’í, Letter of the Living and nephew of Mullá Ḥusayn, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • May: Mullá Mahmúd Khú’í, Letter of the Living, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • May: Mullá Jalíl-i-Urúmí, Letter of the Living, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • May: Mullá Ahmad Abdál Marághi’í, Letter of the Living, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • May: Mullá Yúsúf-i-Ardibílí, Letter of the Living, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • May: Mírzá Muhammad-‘Alí Qazvíní, Letter of the Living, killed at Fort Tabarsí.
  • Mirza Muhammad-Hasan, brother of Mulla Sadiq, killed near Bárfurúsh shortly before the Battle of Fort Tabarsí.
