1848 was a leap year of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year of the Julian calendar, the 1848th year of the Common Era (CE), the 48th year of the 19th century, and the 9th year of the 1840s decade. As of the start of 1848, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1848 corresponds to the years 4–5 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.

Events[edit]

  • March 20: Mullá Ḥusayn visits the Báb in Máh-Kú, having traveled from Mashhad.
  • March 30: Mullá Ḥusayn travels to Mázindarán on the instructions of the Báb, visiting Khuy, Urúmíyyih, Marághih, Mílán, Tabríz, Zanján, Qazvín and Tihrán on the way.
  • April 9: The Báb is removed from the fortress of Máh-Kú by orders of Hájí Mírzá Áqásí. The Russian Minister in Tihrán had requested that the Báb be moved further from the Russian border due to political concerns.
  • April 10: The Báb is transferred to the fortress of Chihríq.
  • June 26: The Conference of Badasht begins, with Quddús, Táhirih and Bahá’u’lláh in attendance.
  • July: The Báb is taken to Tabriz for interrogation in July while the Conference of Badasht was being held. He formally declared His mission to the clergy of Persia during the interrogation. He was bastinadoed and officially condemned for heresy, with a fatwa calling for His execution being signed.
  • July: Quddús is arrested and taken to Sárí. Táhirih is arrested and taken to Tihrán. Mullá Ḥusayn is instructed to travel from Mashhad to Mázindarán while carrying a Black Standard and wearing a green turban. He establishes a camp and many Bábís join him there.
  • July 17: The Conference of Badasht ends, and many of the attendees attacked by a mob in Níyálá while attempting to travel to Mázindarán.
  • July 21: Mullá Ḥusayn sets out for Mázindarán with 202 Bábís. Many more join the company during the journey, some of whom had attended the Conference of Badasht.
  • August: The Báb is returned to Chihríq, as no civil authorities are willing to execute Him, despite the fatwa.
  • September: The Sháh sends an edict for Bahá'u'lláh's arrest while He is in Bandar-Jaz. Bahá'u'lláh is offered passage to Russia to escape arrest but refuses the offer.
  • September 4: The Shah of Persia, Muhammad Sháh, dies.
  • October 10: Mullá Ḥusayn and his companions arrive in Mázindarán. The Sa`ídu'l-`Ulamá of Bárfurúsh incites the populace of Bárfurúsh against the Bábís, and violent clashes occur three or four miles from Bárfurúsh. The Bábís take refuge in a nearby Caravenserai. Mullá Ḥusayn agrees to leave the area, and an escort is provided, however the escort attacks the Bábís after they depart.
  • October 12: The Bábís take refuge at the Shrine of Shaykh Tabarsí and construct a Fort in order to defend themselves, known as Fort Tabarsí. Bahá'u'lláh briefly visits the Fort shortly after it is constructed.
  • October 20: Quddús arrives at Fort Tabarsí.
  • December 19: Approximately 12,000 troops under the command of `Abdu'lláh Khán arrive in Mázindarán and besiege Fort Tabarsí. They cut of supplies of bread and water to the Fort, but a rainstorm destroys their munitions while providing water for the Bábís and snow impedes their mobility.
  • December 21: Quddús leads an attack on the royal troops besieging the Fort, and `Abdu'lláh Khán is killed. Approximately 430 royal troops are killed with no Bábís being killed. The Bábís begin the construction of a moat.
