1852 was a leap year of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year of the Julian calendar, the 1852nd year of the Common Era (CE), the 52nd year of the 19th century, and the 3rd year of the 1850s decade. As of the start of 1852, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1852 corresponds to the years 8–9 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.

- April/May: Bahá’u’lláh returns to Iran from His pilgrimage in Karbalá.
- August 15: Deranged Bábís, acting independently, attempt to avenge the Báb by attempting to kill Nasser al-Din Shah. Their assassination attempt fails.
- August 16: Bahá'u'lláh is arrested in Zargandih. He is interrogated and then taken to Tehran on foot and imprisoned in the Síyáh-Chál.
- August: Bahá'u'lláh' is imprisoned for four months in the Síyáh-Chál. His belongings are seized while He is imprisoned. ‘Abdu'l-Bahá attempts to visit Him with Isfandiyar, but Bahá'u'lláh tells Isfandiyar not to bring ‘Abdu'l-Bahá into the dungeon when they are at the entrance.
- August: Large numbers of Bábís are tortured and executed in retaliation for the assassination attempt. Eighty-one Bábís, thirty-eight of whom are in leadership positions, are arrested and imprisoned in the Síyáh-Chál with Bahá'u'lláh.
- August - December: Mírzá Yahyá goes into hiding in Tákur, and at some point moves to Baghdád.
- October: Bahá'u'lláh has a vision in which He is informed that He is a Manifestation of God, and the figure 'He whom God shall make manifest' foretold by the Báb.
- October 27: The persecution of the Bábís is reported in a Hungarian newspaper.
- December: Bahá'u'lláh is released from the Síyáh-Chál, in part due to the confession of the Bábís who had made the assassination attempt, the efforts of His relatives and the support of Russian Minister Prince Dolgorukov, who objected to the violent persecution of the Bábís. Dolgorukov offers to help Bahá'u'lláh immigrate to Russia, but Bahá'u'lláh chooses to be exiled to Iraq in order to protect the Bábí community.
