- Beginning of the Second Epoch of the Heroic Age of the Bahá’í Faith.
- January 12: Bahá’u’lláh is exiled from Persia. He departs Tehran and sets out for Baghdád with His family.
- March 21: Bahá'u'lláh and His companions observe Naw-Rúz in an orchard near Khániqayn, a town in Iraq close to the Persian border.
- March 26: A group of five Bábís acting independently assassinate the Governor of Nayríz resulting in violent retaliation against the Bábí community.
- April 8: Bahá’u’lláh and His family arrive in Baghdád.
- September: Bahá’u’lláh undertakes another pilgrimage to Karbalá. Mírzá Áqá Ján, a sixteen year old from Kashan, travels to Baghdád, and then to Karbalá to meet Him. Bahá’u’lláh employs him as His amanuensis, despite his lack of a formal education.
- October: The Bábís of Nayríz flee the city and hide in the surrounding hills as the Governor of Nayríz continues arresting Bábís and pillaging their homes.
- October 31: Approximately 860 Bábís imprisoned in Nayríz, most of them women, are taken to Shíráz on foot, along with 180 heads of Bábís who had already been executed.
- November 24: The Nayríz prisoners arrive in Shíráz. More of them are executed, and their heads are sent to Tihrán.
