Vanuatu, officially the Republic of Vanuatu, is an island country in Melanesia located in the South Pacific Ocean. The volcanic archipelago is located east of northern Australia, north east of New Caledibuam east of New Guinea, southeast of the Solomon Islands and west of Fiji. Vanuatu was originally the French collective of New Hebrides before independence in 1977. Vanuatu consists of about 83 relatively small volcanic islands. About 65 are inhabited. Vanuatu's total area is about 12,274 sq km (4,739 sq mi).[2]
