The Federated States of Micronesia is a country located in the Pacific Ocean which formed its own independent government in 1979. Its territory consists of several islands within the Caroline Islands group.
According to one source there were approximately 8,000 Bahá'ís in Micronesia as of 2010, making up 1.5 % of the total population.[1] The CIA World Factbook does not estimate the Bahá'í population of Micronesia specifically, but does estimate that 2.0 % of the population is of a non-specified, or undefined, religious denomination, a category within which the Faith would fall.[3]
History[edit]
'Abdu'l-Bahá mentioned Micronesia in one of the Tablets of the Divine Plan, written in the late 1910's. He encouraged the Bahá'ís to teach the Faith in the region, which he described as one of the three great Island groups of the Pacific Ocean.[4]
The first Bahá'í visit to Micronesia was made by Virginia Breaks in January 1954. She visited Chuuk (or Truk) Island and was named the Knight of Bahá’u’lláh of the Caroline Islands for doing so. On April 7, 1956, Joe Erie Ilengelkei from Palau declared, becoming the first Indigenous Bahá'í of Micronesia.
In 1972 the National Spiritual Assembly of the North West Pacific Ocean was formed, with it's seat on Pohnpei Island in Micronesia.[5]
In 1980 Continental Counsellor Richard Benson was appointed as the first Associate Justice of the Federated States of Micronesia Supreme Court by the Countries first President, and served in the position until 2001, developing the court system of Micronesia during his tenure.[6]
In 1993 prominent Micronesian Bahá'í Andrew Robeman was honoured with a stamp bearing his likeness.[7]
