Eddy Lutchmaya is a Mauritian Bahá’í who has served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Mauritius and as an Auxiliary Board member and Continental Counselor for Africa.
Background[edit]
Lutchmaya was born into a Church of England family in Mauritius.[1] He was introduced to the Bahá’í Faith by his brother Roddy Dharma Lutchmaya in 1956 and began attending firesides held at the home of pioneer Ottilie Rhein and he declared on December 16, 1956, while living in Quatre Bornes. He later married a Bahá’í named Margaret Victorien.[2]
Shortly after declaring Lutchmaya was appointed to an Area Teaching Committee and he was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of the Indian Ocean in the 1960's. He was elected to the inaugural National Spiritual Assembly of Mauritius in 1972 and served on the body until 1976 when he was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member by Counselor Seewoosumbur Jeehoba Appa.[2]
Lutchamaya served as an Auxiliary Board member under the Counselors Roddy Lutchmaya, his brother, and Alexis Gilbert Robert,[3] and in 1994 he was appointed as a Continental Counselor himself when Robert retired due to illness. He was still living in Quatre Bornes when he was appointed as Counselor.[4]
Lutchmaya was appointed for full five year terms as Counselor in 1995, 2000, and 2005. He spoke at the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Bahá’í Faith in Mauritius in 2003,[5] and he represented the Universal House of Justice at a major regional conferences in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2008.[6]
