1866 was a common year of the Gregorian calendar and a common year of the Julian calendar, the 1866th year of the Common Era (CE), the 66th year of the 19th century, and the 7th year of the 1860s decade. As of the start of 1866, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1866 corresponds to the years 22–23 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.

- March: Bahá'u'lláh reveals the Lawḥ-i-Bahá in honour of Khátún Ján, a friend of Táhirih. He first uses the term people of Bahá in the Tablet, distinguishing His followers from the people of the Bayán.
- March: Bahá'u'lláh reveals the Súriy-i-Amr, in which He formally claims to be "He whom God shall make manifest". Mírzá Áqá Ján recites the Tablet to Mírzá Yahyá, who becomes angry. The news of Bahá'u'lláh's claim to Divine Revelation is more widely distributed to the Bábis of Iraq and Persia than His earlier Declaration in 1863.
- March 10: Bahá'u'lláh moves from the House of Amru'lláh, which was shared with Mírzá Yahyá, to the house of Ridá Big. This is now known as the 'Most Great Separation'.
- December: A Bábí is killed in a dispute in Tabríz and approximately one hundred Bahá'ís are arrested in the city.
