1863 was a common year of the Gregorian calendar and a common year of the Julian calendar, the 1863rd year of the Common Era (CE), the 63rd year of the 19th century, and the 4th year of the 1860s decade. As of the start of 1863, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1863 corresponds to the years 19–20 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.
Events[edit]

- January: Námiq Páshá, the Governor of Baghdád, is ordered to exile Bahá'u'lláh to Istanbul by the Grand Vizier of Turkey. He ignores the order, and ignores it when it sent again four more times, but Bahá'u'lláh is eventually exiled to Istanbul a few months later.
- March 26: Bahá'u'lláh celebrates Naw-Rúz at the Mazra‘iy-i-Vashshásh, a farm near His house in Baghdád. He reveals the Tablet of the Holy Mariner on the fifth day of Naw-Rúz on March 26, and it is recited to the Bábis by Mírzá Áqá Ján.
- April: Mírzá Yahyá leaves Baghdád for Mosul in disguise. Bahá'u'lláh had instructed him to distribute the Writings of the Báb in Iran, but he instead travelled to Istanbul.
- April 22–May 3: Bahá’u’lláh resides in the Garden of Ridván, a twelve-day period now celebrated as the Festival of Ridván.
- April 22: First Day of Ridván: Bahá’u’lláh leaves Baghdad and takes up residence in the Najibiyyih Garden, which He names the Garden of Ridván. He declares himself to be He whom God shall make manifest to the Bábis. He forbids the use of the sword the same day.
- April 30: Ninth Day of Ridván: Bahá’u’lláh's family join Him at the Garden of Ridván.
- May 3: Twelfth Day of Ridván: Bahá'u'lláh leaves the Garden of Ridván with His followers. They arrive in Firayját and stay there for seven days. They are not yet aware of where they are being exiled.
- May 9: Bahá'u'lláh and His companions leave Firayját for Istanbul, but are still unaware of where they are being taken. The journey takes 110 days and the exiles stop in many towns while travelling by land.
- August 13: The exiles board a steamship in Sámsún. They stop in Sinope the day after, and Anyábulí two days later before finally arriving in Istanbul.
- August 16: Bahá’u’lláh arrives in Istanbul/Constantinople with around 70 companions. The companions were housed in an inn and a house was rented for Bahá’u’lláh and His family. Mírzá Yahyá's family was invited to stay with Bahá’u’lláh.
- October 19: Bahá'u'lláh reveals the Tablet of the Bell (Subhánika-Yá-Hú).
- December: Bahá'u'lláh learns that He is to be exiled to Edirne. He states that He would rather be martyred than leave, but Mírzá Yahyá insists that they leave.
- December 1: Bahá'u'lláh and His companions depart Istanbul. They travel to Edirne by land in extreme winter conditions.
- December 12: Arrival of Bahá’u’lláh in Edirne/Adrianople
