1903 was a common year of the Gregorian calendar and a common year of the Julian calendar, the 1903rd year of the Common Era (CE), the 3rd year of the 20th century, and the 4th year of the 1900s decade. As of the start of 1903, the Gregorian calendar was 13 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1903 corresponds to the years 59–60 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.

Events[edit]

  • February: Badí`u'lláh, fourth son of Bahá'u'lláh, writes a letter affirming ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as leader of the Bahá’í Faith.
  • March 7: The Chicago House of Spirituality (a precursor to a Local Spiritual Assembly) writes to ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to request permission to construct an American Mashriqu'l-Adhkár, after hearing of the undergoing construction of the `Ishqábád Temple.
  • May: Bahá’ís are persecuted in Rasht.
  • May: Beyle Friedberg writes the play Báb, based on the life of the Báb under the pen name Isabella Grinevskaya.
  • May 28: Several Bahá’ís of Isfahán are beaten by a mob after leaving the Russian Consulate of Isfahán where they had taken refuge from persecution. One Bahá’í dies.
  • March 30: A Tablet from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá approving the request to construct an American Mashriqu'l-Adhkár is received by the Chicago House of Spirituality.
  • June 7: The Chicago House of Spirituality receives a second Tablet approving their request from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.
  • June 8: Bahá'ís in Maláyir, Hamadán, are attacked, beaten and imprisoned. Two are killed.
  • June/July: The Bahá'í community of Yazd is persecuted in the Yazd Upheaval. It is said to be one of the bloodiest events to take place during the ministry of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.
  • September: Hájí Mírzá Hadar-'Alí writes Bahá'í Martyrdoms in Persia in the year 1903 AD at the request of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá.

  • December 25: Habib Sabet, Persian Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of Iran and was a notable and highly successful industrialist.

  • Zaynu’l-Muqarrabín, prominent early Persian Bahá’í who was named an Apostle of Bahá'u'lláh.
  • November 15: Núri'd-Dín, Persian Bahá’í who was a member of the Afnán family and served as caretaker of the House of the Báb.
