- Start of the Third Epoch of the Heroic Age of the Bahá'í Faith.
- Anton Haddad visits the United States. He is probably the first Bahá'í to do so.
- May 8: Bahá'u'lláh contracts a slight fever.
- May 24: Bahá'u'lláh calls the Bahá'ís living in and visiting the Holy Land to His bedside for their last audience with Him.
- May 29: Ascension of Bahá'u'lláh, His mortal remains are placed in the Shrine of Bahá’u’lláh next to the Mansion of Bahjí where He spent His final years.
- June 6: The Kitáb-i-`Ahd, in which Bahá'u'lláh appoints ‘Abdu’l-Bahá as His successor, is read to a large crowd in front of the Tomb of Bahá'u'lláh.
- June 16: ‘Abdu’l-Bahá sends a message to the Bahá'í community. He goes to Haifa and stays in isolation in a small apartment west of the lower cave of Elijah for some time.
- December 20: Ibrahim George Kheiralla arrives in New York City.
