Reference desk on Spanish version of Bahaipedia

Hi,
I've made the Spanish wiki equivalent of Reference desk and Help desk at escritorio de referencias and mesa de ayuda. Could you please add a link to Bahaipedia:Referencias on the "navegación" (navigation) panel with the text "Haga su pregunta"? Ernobe (talk) 16:55, 21 September 2023 (PDT)

Hi Ernobe, that is controlled by es:MediaWiki:Sidebar, I've given you permission to edit that page now. It's a good page to experiment with to see how it works, you might have to purge the page cache to see changes. David (talk) 17:05, 21 September 2023 (PDT)
Thank you. I've included a link to a good basic Wikipedia tutorial (in English at Wikipedia:Tutorial (historical)) on the Spanish Wikipedia site, which should apply there as well in most cases. Ernobe (talk) 08:52, 22 September 2023 (PDT)

I've left you a message at es:Usuario_discusión:David, for another more Spanish wiki specific issue. Ernobe (talk) 08:04, 28 September 2023 (PDT)

Shrine of the Báb pic

Hi,
Comparing Wikimedias' pic: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg with the one at bahai.media: https://bahai.media/File:Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg shows the latter is blurry. It is in use in the English (https://bahaipedia.org/The_Báb) and Spanish (https://es.bahaipedia.org/Báb) versions of the article on the Báb. Is there a special reason for this, or would it be OK to delete the one at Bahai media, so it reverts to the one at Wikimedia Commons? Ernobe (talk) 15:43, 4 October 2023 (PDT)

I've reuploaded the file (for some reason a downscaled version was uploaded to our media site). As for deleting the file, I'd prefer not. It used to be that when a commons file was included in a non-wikimedia wiki like ours all necessary thumbnails would be stored locally on our file system and then served to visitors with no latency issues. That has changed now and any requests for thumbnails go to wikimedia servers, those servers return the file, and only then the page can be fully loaded. The delay is significant on our overseas servers for some reason, often resulting in pages that take more then 10 seconds to load. I haven't disabled including commons files here, but whenever I see them used I replace them with locally stored versions. David (talk) 16:07, 4 October 2023 (PDT)
I see your update at https://bahai.media/File:Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg, but not at https://es.bahaipedia.org/Archivo:Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg or https://bahaipedia.org/File:Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg. They are serving up the same file as before. For example, comparing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Báb with https://bahaipedia.org/The_Báb still shows the latter blurry. Ernobe (talk) 17:39, 4 October 2023 (PDT)
The cached pages will expire at some point and then you'll see the updates. David (talk) 18:01, 4 October 2023 (PDT)
Taking you up on this, can you replace https://file.bahai.media/archive/9/9b/20231004225703%21Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg with https://file.bahai.media/thumb/9/9b/Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg/400px-Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg ? If you look closely the first is blurry, and it gets worse when it is downscaled, and it is the one being used in the article. Replacing it as you say you do in such cases would seem to resolve this (still) unresolved issue. Ernobe (talk) 13:59, 21 July 2024 (PDT)
Hi Ernobe, you linked me to an image with /archive/ in the url, that means "old version" of a file, one that is not currently used anywhere. So in other words, what you're asking has already been done, because the /thumb/ url is the current version. For example when I visit The Báb and view the url of the file at the top of the image I see: https://file.bahai.media/thumb/9/9b/Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg/250px-Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg so aside from being a different size, it's the correct image already. David (talk) 15:01, 21 July 2024 (PDT)
When I visit The Báb and click on the image I don't see a link to the 250px pic (https://file.bahai.media/thumb/9/9b/Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg/250px-Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg) anywhere, what I do see is a link to the 400px pic (https://file.bahai.media/thumb/9/9b/Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg/400px-Shrine_Bab_North_West.jpg). Maybe that explains why I'm not seeing what I'm supposed to. Should I be doing a null edit somewhere? Ernobe (talk) 16:53, 21 July 2024 (PDT)
No, everything is correct. If you go to Preferences then Appearance then look for "Thumbnail size" I'm guessing yours is set to 400px but the default is 250. In any case, that's the correct file. I wouldn't be able to improve things beyond what you're seeing there. David (talk) 17:02, 21 July 2024 (PDT)

Your upload just changed the description. Now it says 3.41mb, but click on it and it's the same file as before, 93kb. I tried uploading the file to https://es.bahaipedia.org/Especial:SubirArchivo but it uploaded it to amazonaws.com and didn't work either so I deleted it. Ernobe (talk) 22:16, 4 October 2023 (PDT)

The old images are cached, you just need to wait a little bit for things to expire. David (talk) 23:07, 4 October 2023 (PDT)
Just for the record, what we are looking at is for this pic, linked to from here, where it says "Size of this preview: 400 x 600 pixels" should be different from this one linked to from here where it says "21:51, 10 October 2007". Ernobe (talk) 08:15, 15 October 2023 (PDT)
You have a very good eye. So what's happening is that whatever software Wikimedia is using behind the scenes to downscale images for thumbnails is much better then the one we're using. It makes sense those two files would be the same if you consider that they are both produced from a downscaled version of the same file. Assuming the same software did the downscaling the images would be the same also. You can compare our thumbnailed versions with a duplicate I just uploaded under a new name here. For comparison here is wikimedia's downscaled version of the file. I had assumed our software would produce the same downscaled quality as wikimedia but that's not the case. I'll do some more testing to see if I can match wikimedia's quality, this would improve every thumbnail on the site, so thank you! David (talk) 09:14, 15 October 2023 (PDT)
The problem is described here, along with the solution. Here is a new upload after adjusting the setting. Let me know what you think. David (talk) 09:31, 15 October 2023 (PDT)
I think that of the two images available at bahai.media it is still serving the downgraded one, and that you are unable to do anything about it. Ernobe (talk) 07:45, 27 October 2023 (PDT)

Flags in country infoboxes

Hi,
Your 12:46, 4 November 2023‎ edit has produced a bug in the infoboxes of several countries that don't have country data templates, for example Colombia, Nicaragua, Argentina, Albania, etc. where, instead of a country name with an optional flag attached to it, there is a red link to its country data template. Ernobe (talk) 18:31, 4 November 2023 (PDT)

Thumbnail error

At ‘Abdu’l-Bahá's_journeys_to_the_West#Journey_of_‘Abdu’l-Bahá_to_America. Ernobe (talk) 08:07, 7 November 2023 (PST)

Thank you for the heads up. David (talk) 10:05, 7 November 2023 (PST)
I'm not getting several images loaded, ie. in Africa, Andaman and Nicobar, etc. Could it be related to something you did at bahai.media? Ernobe (talk) 11:15, 7 November 2023 (PST)
It must be, I had disabled thumbnailing for a bit. If you do a null edit (edit form then "save page" without changing anything) that should tell the system to re-check the images and the thumbnails should appear. Thanks. Null edits are also useful for refreshing category links and templates that might be changed elsewhere but not yet reflected on the intended page. David (talk) 11:20, 7 November 2023 (PST)

Issue with Chameleon

There's one thing that's been really bugging me about Chameleon: Whenever I click on a diff link (say, here), it's impossible for me to find a link from there back to the article itself. The only thing that seems to work is to click on the "Discussion" link in the three-dots menu and then from there, click on the "Page" link. Is there some way we can configure it to show the "Page" link on diff pages too? Dragfyre (talk) 18:48, 15 November 2023 (PST)

Yes that's the one thing about it that's always really annoyed me too, and I've looked in to it but haven't gotten past figuring out what controls that setting, described here. I would really like "Page" to always be part of the dropdown menu even when you're already on a page but chameleon hides "unnecessary" components, look for "Note that button for actions, that are not valid for a given page will be omitted automatically." I would guess something would need to be changed in the theme itself. David (talk) 19:01, 15 November 2023 (PST)

Pic of Bayt-i-‘Aẓam

Located at https://taazakhabarnews.com/house-of-bahaullah-baghdad/ and doesn't seem to be copyrighted. Can it be imported? Ernobe (talk) 07:19, 28 November 2023 (PST)

I believe so, please upload it to media. Here is another source: https://abahaiglossary.org/terms/H/House_of_Bahaullah_In_Baghdad.html David (talk) 08:17, 28 November 2023 (PST)

Error in Template:Citewo2

Hi,
Template:citewo2 has the following example:

{{citewo2|26|3|27|28}}

which if run without the nowiki markup produces:

Hoda Mahmoudi (Spring, 1995). "The Role of Men in Establishing the Equality of Women". World Order. Vol. 26, no. 3. National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States. pp. 27–28.

and for {{citewo2|26|3|27}} also:

Hoda Mahmoudi (Spring, 1995). "The Role of Men in Establishing the Equality of Women". World Order. Vol. 26, no. 3. National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of the United States. p. 27.

Ernobe (talk) 09:24, 10 December 2023 (PST)

Thanks, there was an error in the module logic which is fixed now. David (talk) 10:12, 10 December 2023 (PST)

Husnieh Bahá'í

Hello, David.

It's been a long time, maybe a year is so since I wrote about some of the inaccuracies in the article in the discussion. I only came across it because she is my grandmother, and I doubt many people see it. If you know of anyone who is interested in talking to my uncle who is still alive and remembers the most of her earlier life. I feel that if my grandmother is here my grandfather certainly should be too. They were both grandchildren of Mirza Muhammad Quli. My grandmother wasn't daughter of Mirza Zikhrullah Muhammad Quli, for whom Mr. Khadem was named, and my grandfather was the son of Mirza Munir Muhammad Quli. I hope someone is willing to write an article about my grandfather, and to correct the one about my grandmother, and interview my uncle Munir.

Thank you Nabil Bahá'í (talk) 18:35, 28 May 2024 (PDT)

Hi Nabil, I think the corrections you noted on the talk page are unlikely to be seen, especially since I changed the design of the site which more or less hides the discussion page link. I have received information, suggestions for corrections and things like that in the past and my experience is that unless you do it yourself it won't get done. Would you be able to make the changes yourself? I unfortunately don't have the time to help right now. You might try asking the author of that page User:Jagar, however he may be busy also. David (talk) 18:41, 28 May 2024 (PDT)
Hey. I am uneasy about making edits without a citation, as the information currently in the article draws on the Baha'i Canada obituary which states Mirza Zikrullah was her father. I think perhaps the easiest way would be to conduct an interview, the text of which could then be hosted on bahai.works for posterity and citation. I am wondering Nabil if your Uncle would be comfortable with conducting an interview via email with the text then being publicly shared on bahai.works? Jagar (talk) 19:28, 28 May 2024 (PDT)
Should add, an article about your Grandfather would indeed make a good addition to the site, and absence is only because have been unable to find any information in sources. I feel ideally there should be more biographies of the early Persian Bahá’ís and family histories, however unfortunately I imagine the majority of primary source information is likely in languages other than English, and I am regrettably limited to fluency in English! Jagar (talk) 19:30, 28 May 2024 (PDT)

It is correct that her father was Mirza Zikru'llah, but the full name on his tombstone which I have personally seen where he was reinterred on Tel Susita near Kibbutz Ein Gev near the south shore of the if Galilee in English is Mirza Zikru'llah Muhammad Quli. The arrangements and tombstones were all done under the direction of the Universal House of Justice. I am willing to make the edits, but I don't know how to do citations. The last person that knew my grandfather who is a Bahá'í outside of my family was Ali Nakhjavani. There is no written record of him other than a passing mention of his name in The Priceless Pearl, Ali Nakhjavani's letter to my uncle expressing his condolences, and perhaps a statement by the Universal House of Justice. I have asked a fellow local Bahá'í to interview him on video. He is not good with email,or typing, or texts. I don't have primary sources other than a video of my grandmother remembering her early life in 1992 and my family's memories. All of my family defer to Uncle Munir for family history, both because of his age, memory, and lifelong interest in family history. Ruhiyyih Khanum had encouraged my grandfather to write a book about his time serving the beloved Guardian. He died shortly after the first election of the Universal House of Justice. Ali Nakhjavani told my family that his funeral was one of the first acts they performed together. He is buried in the Bahá'í cemetary i'm Haifa with an Arabic tombstone. My grandparents were both natively fluent in Persian and Arabic, but starting with my father's generation the family's first language is Arabic and it is only my father out of the six who survived to adulthood who can even hold a simple conversation. I don't know yet how to make edits, and I feel it is very unfortunate if the primary source of information is oral and can't be cited.

We know very little of Mirza Muhammad Quli other than 'Abdu'l-Bahá's tribute to him in Memorials of the Faithful and a provisional translation of a tablet written to him by 'Abdu'l-Bahá.

This is the link to that provisional translation, sent to me by Adib Masumian shortly after he translated it:

This is an interview with her done by my grandfather William Richter in 1973:

This is a recording she made herself on a cassette of her chanting and singing Bahá'í songs in English, Arabic, Persian, and French.

I also have a lot better choices of pictures of her, including her pioneering days on the Caribbean and 2 of her with Ruhiyyih Khanum. Also, how can we share our emails without making them public?

In other projects link to nothing

Hi,
I've been trying to get rid of the "En otros proyectos" (In other proyects) link that links to nothing on the Spanish site (at https://es.bahaipedia.org/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Chameleon.css&curid=243&diff=2781&oldid=2493). It shows up prominently in two places, at the top and in the sidebar. I'm not familiar enough with the code to make any more suggestions. Ernobe (talk) 08:32, 4 January 2025 (PST)

Should be fixed (shows immediately if you're logged in and force a refresh, might take longer to become apparent for everyone else depending on caches). David (talk) 10:57, 4 January 2025 (PST)

"In other projects" links in Spanish Bahaipedia

Hi
The "in other projects" links only link to bahai.media. I've checked in other wikis (en,fr,vi,pt) and they do include bahai.works and bahai9.com links. Ernobe (talk) 08:14, 18 January 2025 (PST)

Shows up on all other than English Bahaipedias, but only with the Chameleon skin (wouldn't be an issue if Chameleon was not the default). Ernobe (talk) 04:59, 17 February 2025 (PST)

I appreciate the heads up! Thanks. David (talk) 10:07, 17 February 2025 (PST)
