Hi Jagar, it seems like you are the first person to use the new VisualEditor extension. I deployed it as an experiment, perhaps temporarily, and I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts about using it. There are some bugs and places it doesn't work, but it provides some distinct advantages over the old editor that made me want to see how it would perform here. --David (talk) 07:32, 2 September 2016 (PDT)

Hello David, I'm assuming the visual editor is the one where it 'looks' like the actual page? It's great for editing the text of a page once the 'scaffolding' of the page is set up, being a better way of seeing how the page is going to look without having to preview. I haven't tried using it for adding headings, referencing or the summary box thing yet because I think the source editing works well for that, and I'm not sure how to use the visual editor to do the more finnicky things using the visual editor.
Yes, that's the one. I haven't used it for serious editing myself either, but it's proving very useful for proofreading since it hides all the code that normally distracts your eye when scanning a page. David (talk) 18:55, 2 September 2016 (PDT)

Discussion on site organization[edit]

FYI: I started a discussion on site organization at the Pilgrim House. Feel free to pitch in when you have some time! Dragfyre (talk) 14:57, 23 August 2017 (PDT)

Baha'i World[edit]

Hi Jagar, wanted to let you know that I'm working on rescanning The Baha'i World series. In order for me to easily find images that need to be replaced from that series I created a new category called "Category:Low quality". Can you add that category to low quality images you upload from Bahai World or Baha'i News (I have most Baha'i News issues and can rescan better quality images from there too)? David (talk) 17:30, 29 September 2017 (PDT)

Sure thing, excellent work with the bahai.works site as a whole by the way. Jagar (talk) 18:36, 29 September 2017 (PDT)
Thank you. It is where I am spending most of my time and I hope to have the World Order and Baha'i World series completed next. It will be quite fun when you can search across all these great resources. David (talk) 06:50, 30 September 2017 (PDT)

Talk:Ellsworth Blackwell[edit]

See issue about the volume of Baha'i World being referenced. I ran across this because I'm going to mention the Blackwells in relation to an upgrade to the Louhelen article. Smkolins (talk) 06:46, 6 December 2017 (PST)

Howard MacNutt[edit]

FYI have been gathering a massive review of MacNutt's life and actions for a much more substantial biography. I'd be glad to share. --Smkolins (talk) 17:03, 31 May 2018 (PDT)

Excellent news! I look forward to seeing what you've found. Jagar (talk) 08:29, 1 June 2018 (PDT)
He was an international cricket player from the US - played against Canada and in the UK for the US. And he was borrowing his brother in law's yacht when it sank - not his fault. Various tidbits. Some bigger. I have an estimated 800 citations from newspapers and elsewhere so it will take some boiling down. Can I contact you somewhere? You on facebook? --Smkolins (talk) 08:32, 1 June 2018 (PDT)
Sorry - tech interpirtation error - closer to 400 cites. but still.--Smkolins (talk) 08:35, 1 June 2018 (PDT)

Or I could post it to a sandbox. --Smkolins (talk) 09:51, 1 June 2018 (PDT) I invite you over to User:Smkolins/sandbox5. It's totally rough at the moment but I believe there is enough material to count as the basis of a total replacement of the existing article making sure to include relevant parts - but I think those sources are in this work up. There should also be something else being published that will extend the impact of MacNutt in Florida considerably but will wait to see what actually is published.--Smkolins (talk) 16:35, 1 June 2018 (PDT)

I concur that a 'start-from-scratch' approach incorporating the info from the current, briefer, article into the near comprehensive info you've compiled is the way to go. Looking forward to seeing it come together Jagar (talk) 04:45, 2 June 2018 (PDT)
Great - I'm going to be out and about for the next few hrs. A small point is the familysearch.org requires registration and the genealogybank cites require subscription, whenever the syntax upgrades come along but just fyi. If you need to see something just let me know - there is a way to share results to a few. --Smkolins (talk) 04:58, 2 June 2018 (PDT)

Ok - a lot of work has been done integrating cites but a ton of work remains upgrading the syntax and readability and a final check on integrating existing information from the article. I'd appreciate any help. --Smkolins (talk) 07:24, 6 June 2018 (PDT)

Will hopefully have time to do some serious editing this weekend (have done some minor stuff). It's quite good already though. The only major non-rewording change I can see being beneficial so far is putting all information related to MacNutt's parents/siblings in one spot rather than in chronological order of the sources (although it does make sense to have them chronologically before the article is completed). Jagar (talk) 15:12, 6 June 2018 (PDT)
  • Ok - except for footnote 324… which may take the next month to come out… I think it is substantially done. Please contribute tweaking or bring up issues. It could go forward with the footnote onsteady yet but … well what do you think? --Smkolins (talk) 07:45, 24 August 2018 (PDT)
    • My critiques are only arbitrary stylistic ones, and I think the article is ready to replace the current one as is, as any edits will only be for aesthetic reasons. My preference would be to cut down the introductory segment to be a shorter less detailed summary of it as is, and incorporate the majority of it into the body of the article. I also think that there could be less emphasis on the sources of information in the text of the article (ie. it could be written that Howards father was a carpenter and citing the census, rather than writing that Howards father was recorded as a carpenter in the census). However my preferences are purely subjective. Jagar (talk) 11:01, 24 August 2018 (PDT)
      • Also, you have probably seen it already, but in case not this team photo of the 1884 Philadelphian Cricket team features the man himself: https://imagehost.vendio.com/preview/ha/haats/HW1884P337679.jpg https://heatonhistorygroup.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/gents-of-phil2ed.jpg?w=625&h=356 Jagar (talk) 11:17, 24 August 2018 (PDT)
Excellent finds! OK - I agree it is ready to move into main space as is and let you and others edit as they see fit. I'll do that now. Absolutely include those pictures. :-) --Smkolins (talk) 09:01, 25 August 2018 (PDT)

Lost some work[edit]

Hi Jagar, I ran into a problem with the site and had to revert to last-night's backups. I think some of your work was lost and I can't seem to access the current drive anymore. Do you happen to recall what you'd changed? David (talk) 05:44, 16 August 2018 (PDT)

Hey David, was just some numbers on Baha'i community number estimates from the US Religious Freedom Report website. Was only a handful so shouldn't take long to redo when I get the chance. Jagar (talk) 16:02, 16 August 2018 (PDT)
Ok, sorry about that. I'll be more careful in making backups before I do work on the server. David (talk) 19:49, 16 August 2018 (PDT)

Rescan of Bahai News[edit]

I re-scanned about 500 of my Baha'i News issues to improve the image quality of the issues. Will be uploading them later tonight. Let me know if you'd like a zip file with all them in one place. David (talk) 16:19, 31 August 2018 (PDT)

Would appreciate that thanks. Look forward to updating photos from them on bahai.media. Jagar (talk) 19:51, 31 August 2018 (PDT)
The folder is 11GB, and I'm only about half way through OCR'ing the pdf files. The ones I did complete, about 200-500 have been uploaded to bahai.media by maintenance script, see: https://bahai.media/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/Maintenance_script&offset=&limit=500&target=Maintenance+script and I will work on getting the rest OCR'd. Let me know if you'd like them all in a ZIP once I finish. David (talk) 12:56, 3 September 2018 (PDT)
Here is the folder of re-scanned BN, it's about 6GB: https://s3.amazonaws.com/text_pdf/RS.zip Let me know once you've got it please. David (talk) 07:47, 8 September 2018 (PDT)
Have downloaded it. Thanks heaps for it, and of course bahai.works in general. Jagar (talk) 09:06, 9 September 2018 (PDT)

In Memoriam 1992-1997[edit]

Hi Jagar,

I saw you added a picture from a book titled "In Memoriam 1992-1997" on bahai-library.com. It seems like the quality was not too good, so I purchased a copy of the book. I'll have it in a few days and scan it after that. Will let you know once it's online. David (talk) 20:42, 15 September 2018 (PDT)

Here it is: https://s3.amazonaws.com/miscbahai/In_Memoriam_1992-1997.pdf David (talk) 18:56, 23 September 2018 (PDT)

BW Vol 8[edit]

I extracted the images from BW Vol 8 some years ago here: https://bahai.media/Category:BW_Volume_8. Granted the naming convention for files is bad.. but you can do with that what you like, at least you shouldn't have to re-upload them. David (talk) 18:35, 27 September 2018 (PDT)

Thanks!, easier to browse the images there than scrolling through the pdf as well. Jagar (talk) 18:58, 27 September 2018 (PDT)
Rescanned some more BW, #9 and 12. Bahá’í World. David (talk) 13:59, 2 October 2018 (PDT)

Disciples of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá[edit]

I was curious about the discrepancy between the Baha'i World volumes with regards to the list of disciples. I reached out to a friend, who in turn knew someone who wore a book on Albert Schwarz, and asked that person on my behalf. The answer was Albert Schwarz was definitely not the individual whose photo appears in the volumes. I will work on finding a source to cite, but for now I have made some changes to the relevant pages. Please take a look and see if you want to fix anything I did. David (talk) 05:37, 6 October 2018 (PDT)

I have wondered about this, I assumed because that Schwarz was the correct individual as he is the name on the Vol. 4 list, so perhaps the picture was misprinted in both? Not 100% sure either way though. An issue of Baha'i News from 1935 (after Vol. 4 of BW) lists Brauns as a Disciple, although it specifically cites BW Vol. 3. From google a recent source states that it's unclear: https://books.google.com.au/books?id=pYfrAQAAQBAJ&pg=PT136&lpg=PT136&dq=Dr.+Arthur+Brauns&source=bl&ots=mQAYIJEnNU&sig=TrDyBpRlbjELxZby_Us48A2AbIE&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjAhOud8fHdAhUTd94KHf66A-UQ6AEwA3oECAcQAQ#v=onepage&q=Dr.%20Arthur%20Brauns&f=false I think it is probably best to list both and note the discrepancy. Jagar (talk) 06:21, 6 October 2018 (PDT)
I don't think Peter Smith's Concise Encyclopedia of the Baha'i Faith is a reliable source for this point. I have a copy of that book and his citations are the Baha'i World volumes, which we already know conflict. I will search for another source, but my thinking is they were not both appointed, and the list should be accurate once we can figure this out. David (talk) 07:15, 6 October 2018 (PDT)
I have found a definitive source, verified by the Research Department at the World Center. Albert Schwarz was listed in error. I will update the page as soon as I have the citation ready. David (talk) 07:34, 6 October 2018 (PDT)

Australia![edit]

I see we have a mutual interest. By all means help out the sandbox! Smkolins (talk) 16:15, 25 March 2019 (PDT)

Will do, article is coming along nicely. On another note while it's likely going to take a while to go through all of trove's papers on the Faith you may be interested in this archive of New Zealand papers in the future: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ Jagar (talk) 21:45, 25 March 2019 (PDT)
Yes I'm familiar and it does seem a natural extension of the work - I noticed a few Zealanders coming to Australia to give talks! Smkolins (talk) 02:57, 26 March 2019 (PDT)

I really like...[edit]

I really like how I created a stub called Edward Kinney with no more than eighteen words in it, and a couple of hours later you come in and blow it up to no less than 664 words. If we had barnstars here I'd give you one. Dragfyre (talk) 01:23, 3 April 2019 (PDT)

Breakwell picture[edit]

I suggest it be posted to the wikipedia article too. :-) Smkolins (talk) 07:24, 5 April 2019 (PDT)

More Minneapolis content[edit]

Just FYI I have to two sandbox articles that relate… [1], [2] which are not done…. Smkolins (talk) 09:10, 10 March 2020 (PDT)

The scope of your research is truly inspiring! These troves can definitely be mined to flesh out the Minneapolis article (I can also see some stuff which could be incorporated into Albert Hall article). Jagar (talk) 09:17, 10 March 2020 (PDT)
Go ahead and mine sources for multiple uses. There are names I've also not chased down. If we can get more people writing I can spend more time ferreting. ;-) Smkolins (talk) 09:23, 10 March 2020 (PDT)

Baha'u'llah's family[edit]

The recent articles about Baha'u'llah's family are really interesting. Thanks for your effort on them so far, please keep it up! Dragfyre (talk) 03:49, 2 January 2022 (PST)

Development of Ten Year Crusade intranational work in the US[edit]

Hi, See [3] with subsidiary articles [4], [5], [6], [7] that spin off - all of which will need integration into existing articles. I'd welcome input and fixing up things before 'finishing' them if you are interested. Smkolins (talk) 07:33, 17 January 2022 (PST)

Sadru's-Sudur[edit]

Hi there... I know this is more your ground anyways, but when making a redirect when there is an existing page, could you be sure to integrate the existing content? I think there is some useful information still from https://bahaipedia.org/index.php?title=%E1%B9%A2adru%E2%80%99%E1%B9%A3-Sud%C3%BAr&diff=0&oldid=99954 that wasn't incorporated into Sadru’s-Sudúr. Thanks! 107.2.16.56 17:32, 3 August 2023 (PDT)

Infobox Person[edit]

Hi Jagar - I saw your revert on {{Infobox Person}} - just curious, did it break something that I wasn't aware of? Thanks, Dragfyre (talk) 17:01, 5 November 2023 (PST)

Oh haha, nvm, I just saw you reverted your own revert right afterwards XD Let me know if I can help fix or improve anything though. FYI I am hoping to merge a few older-style templates (such as {{Infobox Writer}} and {{Infobox hand of the cause}}) into Infobox Person, so that we can use it on a wider variety of articles. Dragfyre (talk) 17:05, 5 November 2023 (PST)

Blockquotes[edit]

Hi! I'm not sure why it's like this but if you want a proper paragraph break when using blockquotes you have to hit return after the opening tag, eg here. David (talk) 19:19, 12 November 2023 (PST)

Thanks! Definitely has been annoying me for a while Jagar (talk) 19:21, 12 November 2023 (PST)

Citing from The American Bahá’í[edit]

I spent some time moving all the American Baha'i files so they all have a common title structure (File:The American Bahá’í VolX NoX.pdf) and rewrote Template:Citeab and Module:AmericanBahai so you can cite the American Baha'i without having to explicitly reference years, months or volumes and issues. I'm hoping to expand the template to accommodate special issues like File:The American Bahá’í February 1978 Extra.pdf so if you want to cite something like that in the future check the template documentation and I'll update it there if I get it working. David (talk) 17:23, 15 November 2023 (PST)

I've finished the templates for American Baha'i, Star of the West and the first series of World Order, working on the second: Bahaipedia:Citing_sources#Custom_citation_templates David (talk) 15:47, 20 November 2023 (PST)

Asadu’lláh[edit]

This came up on Discord. Are Mírzá Asadu’llah Isfahani and a certain Siyyid Asadu'llah (far right in File:‘Abdu’l-Bahá at the Parson's home.jpg the same person? I removed the photograph from the former article and renamed the image you had cropped to File:Siyyid Asadu'llah.png. This site gives the individual's full name as Siyyid Asadu’llah-i-Qumi so it appears to be someone different. However, they were both apparently in America with ‘Abdu’l-Bahá which has me confused. David (talk) 15:37, 5 June 2024 (PDT)

Thanks, they are different people. Will write article for pic. Jagar (talk) 10:43, 9 June 2024 (+08)

Iranian cities[edit]

I was just going through the blue links in List of Iranian provinces and noticed how much, and how well, you've expanded some of them. Well done and thanks for your unrelenting hard work! (Now what to do for the province articles...?) Dragfyre (talk) 02:59, 3 August 2024 (PDT)

Citation template idea[edit]

Hi Jagar, would you find it useful to have a citation template which takes the book title and page number as an input and outputs the full citation information? Eg: {{cite|Anchor of Faith|105}} which results in something like Frederick Landry and Richard Thomas. Anchor of Faith. Wilmette, IL: Bahá’í Publishing Trust, 2022. Pg 105. ? The info can be stored/pulled from Bahaidata and accept various parameters if previously defined like {{cite|AoF|105}} or the item number if you wanted: {{cite|Q2245|105}}. David (talk) 08:36, 22 August 2024 (PDT)

The cite template has been finished. If the book title isn't connected to Bahaidata the template will display just title and optional page number. I'll keep an eye out for those and backfill the publication data later. David (talk) 14:55, 28 August 2024 (PDT)
Thanks, will try to remember to use it! Jagar (talk) 12:03, 29 August 2024 (+08)

Taoism update[edit]

The update to Taoism is really nice! It really improved the article a lot. Dragfyre (talk) 08:59, 7 December 2024 (+08)

Software updates and new site[edit]

MediaWiki was recently upgraded to 1.43. Let me know if you run in to any bugs. Also, I've built out a website meant to link to/describe all the current websites and projects that are ongoing, you can find it at https://digitalbahairesources.org/ - it also contains public traffic statistics and the ability to view these stats on a per-url basis.
