Born and raised[edit]

In 1871 and 1881 George was living in the home of William W and Jane Winterburn in Leamington Spa, today a suburb of Warwick, near Birmingham, England. The father earned an income by hosting lodgers, of which there were three at the time. He had an older brother William H and a younger brother Sidney E.[1] In 1881 George was listed as a scholar as his job.[2] There was a college in town later[3] This is one of the places that regularly published coverage of Bábí history events.[4] Other Winterburns of Leamington/Warwick are still mentioned.[5]

Rosa was born in Warren, Michigan, on June 24, 1861.[6] George was born in Leamington Spa, England, Oct 20, 1865.[6] Formerly known as Rose V Barton.[7][8]

George won prizes in Wesleyan School of Leamington Spa in drawing in three drawing specialties the same year.[9]

He immigrated to the US on the S.S. City of Richmond from Liverpool on Sept 14, 1886.[6]

Rosa in 1870 Census in the home of farmers Oliver and Francis Barton. Francis was born in England.[10] However, Rosa not listed 1880.[11]

Married[edit]

San Diego[edit]

He had resided in San Diego CA 1886-1896[6] Aug 15, 1889, George T Winterburn and Rose V Barton marry in San Diego.[8]

Mar 10, 1891, Mrs Winterburn was supervising a dance at the San Diego High School.[12]

Established residency near El Nido, CA which in the countryside southeast of San Francisco.[13]

George registered to vote on August 18, 1892, in San Diego after being naturalized Jan 19, 1892. He was listed as a bookeeper and had a scar on his left hand.[14] naturalized in San Diego Jan 19, 1892.[6] He also registered in September 1894.[15]

Rosa (she uniformly went by the name Rose but only during this time in Stockton) graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with an advanced Bachelor’s of Law (superior to a Bachelor's of Science?) degree in 1895.[16] (she was later credited with a MA degree from the University of Michigan - see 1932 mention in Star of the West)

By 1895, she was known to be a recent graduate of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with post-graduate work after seven years teaching in San Diego. She also has diplomas in French and German.[17] That August, George and Rosa were guests at a hotel in San Francisco.[18]

Split between Stockton and San Diego[edit]

January 1896 George and Rosa were hotel guests in Stockton, California.[19] That summer Rosa was noted a new addition to the Stockton High School,[17][20] and taught German.[21] Rose bought a track of timber.[7]

In the summer of 1896, Rosa camped near Mount Shasta.[22] More than a week later, George & Rosa stayed at a hotel in Sacramento,[23] and Rosa returned to work in August.[24] That winter Rosa presided at a session of the San Jose winter conference of the State Teachers' Association.[25] Her career at Ann Arbor and Berkeley had been remarked on.[26]

Meanwhile, George was a registered voter in San Diego, listed as a bookkeeper.[14]

Rose's father, Oliver Barton, died at age 75 on March 15, 1897 back in Warren, Michigan.[27] In April Rosa went to a meeting of a History Committee of the State Teachers Association in October.[28] and chaired another meeting of the group in October.[29] Select student essays, rewrites of a piece by Rose, were shared showing their own grasp of history,[30] and endeavor then echoed around the state.[31] In between George was visible among the honorable mentions at a University of California at Berkeley art competition held by the University Magazine.[32]

In December, Rosa, as chair of the history department at Stockton High, published a statement on the progress of history:

Only those who have never studied history lose heart in great reforms. This is one of the reasons we have for the study of history. Our nation needs reforms. We cannot risk making mistakes. The study of history gives us the experience of the ages. From it, therefore, we may be able to prepare the statesmen of the coming years for mature judgement, more discreet action in cases of need than our country has always met with in days gone by.[33]

In the April of 1898, George was visibly employed and given a raise at the University of California at Berkeley,[34] aided in a reception,[35] and was given compensation for his voluntary service in the Spanish-American War of April-December, 1898.[36] In the summer, Rosa hosted graduates at her home in Stockton on Hunter Street.[37] By August Rosa and the returned George had spent time at Glen Ellen, Sonoma County.[38]

Rosa's advanced work[edit]

In the fall of 1898 Rosa worked under Dr. Babcock on a new book on US History for the California State Board of Education.[39]

George was among the judges at the student's debate at Berkeley on whether the US should keep the Philippines as a territory, being among the unanimous against.[40] In November Rosa presented "A Course in History and Literature in the Primary and Grammar Grades" at the Teachers Association of Northern California conference in Chico listed as the Stockton High School Supervising Teacher in History and Literature.[41] That winter George visited.[42]

Rosa’s 1899 report to the state education agency on a proposed text was presented, and published a year later to the public.[43] That year Rosa’s German class put on a play,[44] she was on reception committee,[45] and was part of committee to present at national conference.[46] That summer Rosa went to Pacific Groves and then Los Angeles,[47] though she and George also went to Yosemite in July.[48]

In November Rosa was an instructor at the Teachers' Institute held in San Joaquin.[49] Rosa’s paper to the Teachers' Institute meeting in Stockton is titled "Is the Course in History Practical for All Grades?" and published in a Stockton newspaper and generally there was a number of articles covering the meeting.[50] She also co-presented on children and teaching history.[51]

There was another State Conference at the end of December.[52] The summer of 1900 George and Rose go to Yosemite.[53] She received a raise - placed as the second highest salary in the school - for leading German, history & literature across schools.[54] Later Rose was called one of the best and highest paid teachers of the state,[55] Her service was remembered decades later[56] In August the couple took up an address on College Ave in Berkeley, CA,[57] while George's department was shuffled at the University.[58]

In November, Rosa led several seminars at Teachers Institute.[59] That December Rosa formed a history club in Stockton,[60] and was at a Stockton Teachers’ Institute in early December,[61] and a state conference in late December.[62]

In January 1901 George was visible visiting unnamed kin in Stockton, CA.[63] That year George created a commemorative bookplate for materials collected because of Jane Sather’s donation to the University of California at Berkeley.[64]

In April, whereas Rosa's previous talks and presentations had mentioned California, now one appears covering US history in general, this time featuring the Civil War, slavery, etc.[65] She was also named among the group of people to review US history summaries for consideration as textbooks.[66] However in May Rosa announced her resignation from Stockton Schools.[67] Meanwhile George took part in special preparations for a parade,[68] and was transferred for the second year in a row when he was moved to the department of instrumental drawing at the University of California at San Francisco.[69] and had been a free hand drawing teacher.[70] Despite resigning, Rose helped at a banquet for the graduating class in Stockton.[71] She was still listed living in Stockton in some reports in 1902.[16]

The Bahá'ís[edit]

First contacts[edit]

It remains unknown when George and Rosa first encountered the Bahá'í Faith. It could have been in California or Europe - there are possible connections in either. Perhaps they had been influenced by the pilgrimage led by Phoebe Hearst along with Lua Getsinger several years previous in 1898, the various levels and kinds of activity say at the University of Berkeley after their return, for example. Or perhaps it wasn't until they were in Paris where they did for sure cross paths with the Bahá'ís there and, like Thomas Breakwell or May Maxwell(Bolles at the time), made the decision to pilgrimage from there.[72] Breakwell had suddenly changed his plans, had made his pilgrimage in latter 1901, and died in June 1902. Meanwhile, Bolles returned to Paris, and then married William Maxwell in London in December 1902. There was also some coverage in the newspapers. So, who and how exactly the Winterburns crossed paths with in Paris is also unclear. *** Maybe a careful review of Lighting the Western Sky can find some more likely candidates?***

George and Rosa applied for a passport on June 4, 1902, from New York, when their permanent residence was in Berkeley, CA. He was listed as an art student, and they intended to return from the trip within a year.[6] At the time of applying for a passport, they were living in New York city.[6] In July, Rosa’s book on Spanish history in California was published[73] and the couple were off to New York intending to go to Scotland and Europe.[74]

It is unclear if this is when, but George is later listed as having attended the Vitti Academy in Paris,[75] and studied under Luc-Olivier Merson(1846 – 1920), Paul Leroy(1860-1942) and Frits Thaulow(1847 - 1906) in Paris.[76]

The first unequivocal mention of the Faith with the Winterburns so far found is a Tablet of Abdu’l-Bahá To Mrs. Winterburn dated Feb. 1903.[77] The date of the letter he had sent to 'Abdu'l-Bahá is not known but may have been sent in late 1902, considering shipping times of letters. How they obtained contact information is as yet unknown. Despite having no particular actions taken in their histories apart or together on the subject of religion, clearly, these Tablets are in response to Christian issues and expectations and proceeded to be moved greatly to investigate the Bahá'í Faith and see 'Abdu'l-Bahá personally. This Tablet is an investigation of the meaning of Christ, ie body vs spirit, where He ascended to, whether a physical space or a spiritual space, and the like.

O thou who dost believe in the Spirit of Christ, in the Kingdom of God! The body … is necessarily subject to decomposition; but the spirit is an essence, simple, pure, spiritual, eternal, perpetual and divine. He who seeketh Christ from the point of view of His body hath, in truth, debased Him and hath gone astray from Him; but he who seeketh Christ from the point of view of His Spirit will grow from day to day in joy, attraction, zeal, proximity, perception and vision. Thou hast then to seek the Spirit of Christ in this marvelous day.[78]

The next Tablet is still in Paris and 1903 and before the pilgrimage. It begins "O ye who are considering the Kingdom of your august Savior!".[79] It suggests they had decided to come on pilgrimage and that there is a need to temporarily prevent their trip to the Holy Land and that in California, great achievements were possible through them. In Memories of Nine Years in 'Akka by Youness Afroukhteh,[80] it notes that they had attempted pilgrimage circa 1903, but had to stay in Paris for “several months”.[80] A short Tablet comes again to Paris, beginning "O ye two singing birds in the Garden of Belief!".[81] One last Tablet before pilgrimage begins "O thou who art turning unto the Kingdom of God!".[82]

Pilgrimage[edit]

After some time in 1903 it was suggested they come as far as Port Said in Egypt, where again they had to wait “some time” and before being finally allowed to come to Haifa.[80]

Stephen Phelps's Partial Inventory details several dates of meetings of the Winterburns and 'Abdu'l-Bahá.

There is the Tablet of Abdu’l-Baha to Mr & Mrs Winterburn Feb. 10, 1904[83] and March 23, 1904[84]

The pilgrim house was empty save an old Zoroastrian from Bombay and a child. During the pilgrimage they met the old man saying “East shall embrace West”. The pilgrim report of the Winterburns noted the Parsis Zoroastrian elder himself thought this was a prophecy fulfilled when East and West met like this.[80]

Paris and West[edit]

A Tablet after their pilgrimage is known when they returned to Paris, translated on March 23, 1904. ***this date needs to be checked against the Persian text indicating it was *written* March 23, 1904 - see internal cite of quote:***[85]:

O ye two pilgrims of the Holy Shrine!

The news of your safe arrival in Paris was received and rejoiced my heart, as did the description of the love and devotion of the friends in Paris, who met you with exceeding joy and radiance, and who show forth the utmost love, faithfulness, and sincerity. Speak openly of all the signs of the Kingdom of God that ye have witnessed with your own eyes and share with the utmost happiness and exultation all that ye have heard of the divine teachings. I fervently supplicate God to bring assurance to your souls and to raise you up with such steadfastness that each of you may withstand an entire nation. May you become so inebriated with the wine of the love of God that ye may cause your hearers to dance with blissful rapture to the song and melody of the love of God.

This is the time for gladness, the day of joy and exhilaration, for, praised be God, all doors are opened wide through the bounty of the Abhá Beauty. But high endeavour and self-sacrifice are needed and the concentration of one’s thoughts is required for the tree of hope to yield its fruit and results to be achieved.[86]

By May 1904, they were listed as returning to America, leaving Scotland, and going to New York.[87]

In June, remarked upon as having returned, George was listed with the Berkeley university summer school, and Rosa had been with Stockton High and was now with Oakland High School.[88] The Winterburns were also noted in June in the minutes of the Chicago Bahá'í "House of Spirituality", a predecessor of a Local Spiritual Assembly, speaking of their experience in Akka and Paris.[89] George and Rosa came to Stockton where Rosa's mentions continued to be noted to the end of July,[90] while George was listed among faculty at the high school in Los Angeles teaching drawing.[91] Meanwhile the Stockton School System had been fielding a large number of inquiries about their reforms and asked a committee of select teachers to prepare a report for them to participate in the St Louis Exposition of 1904, from which Rosa emerged as a leader which became a book The Stockton Methods or Methods in Teaching published by Rosa in 1907.[92]

From Northern California to Southern[edit]

In 1904, George was noted living in Los Angeles as a tech drawing high school teacher, rooming at a room on Temple Rd.[93] By the end of the summer, each was listed as graduates of the University of California at Berkeley and had been hired as teachers, though "from" different places. George was listed from Los Angeles and Rosa was listed at Oakland, CA.[94]

Across September, the Winterburn exchanged letters with the Chicago Bahá'í "House of Spirituality", or comments in the group, about reports of their pilgrimage and the rise towards publishing the account.[95]

In October, Rosa was mentioned presenting at the Stockton area Teachers Institute.[96] but wasn't able to present one day,[97] though present the next.[98]

There was a Tablet of Abdu’l-Baha to Mr & Mrs Winterburn Nov. 6, 1904[99]

Letters between the Winterburns and the Chicago Bahá'í "House of Spirituality" came again in February 1905, mentioning the Winterburns had moved to Los Angeles, while some earlier activities of them report others who had been moved by them to investigate the Faith.[100]

There is a Tablet from 'Abdu'l-Baha to Mrs. Rose Winterburn, trans. April 7, 1905,[101] and a separate Tablet to George.[102]

Sometime between late 1904 and early 1905, Rose gave a talk in Stockton on "A Mediterranean Tour,” mentioned only second-hand.[103]

Rosa mentioned the Faith at a Berkeley teachers' group, which piqued Ella Bailey's interest, and she went on to correspond with Lua Getsinger.[104]

In May 1905, Rosa was visible at a school teacher’s conference in northern California.[105] In August 1905, Rosa resigned from the Oakland High School,[106] and published at an article in Sunset Magazine published out of San Francisco.[107]

Los Angeles[edit]

George is listed head of Los Angeles Polytechnic High School Drawing Department.[108]

Rose had attended Columbia U and credited with BL degree.[109] By November Rose visited in Stockton after being in Amador and on her way to Fresno, and then Los Angeles.[110]

Rose presented at a Los Angeles area Teachers’ Institute in January 1906,[111] and was named on state review committee for applicants for certification out of Los Angeles.[112] In march George was listed among the members of a painters' club in Los Angeles.[113] In early 1906 George was a teacher in the Polytech High School and they lived at 1814 Oak St. Los Angeles.[114]

'Abdul-Baha sent a Tablet in response to a letter from Grace Lamb returned through Rose Winterburn, translated about July 1906, partly in response to the Great Quake of 1906[115] and also founding a Baha’i community in San Francisco.[116]

The Winterburn's report of their pilgrimage, shared from 1906,[citation needed].

There is a Tablet of Abdu’l-Baha to Mrs Winterburn July 15, 1906[117]

In August, George was head of the drawing department, including 4 others in Los Angeles.[118] There was also a letter to the "Chicago House of Spirituality" sharing some of the Tablets from Abdu'l-Baha including the one to Mrs. Lamb.[119]

In November, Rosa was noted as a speaker, having written a text on California's history, and studied art in Paris.[120]

By December, institutional comment was made that the Winterburn pilgrim notes would be published. At the time, several communities independently had to approve publishing: Chicago, Kenosha, Washington, D.C., and New York City.[121] That same time, Rosa was at a later December Teachers’ Institute at Stockton.[122]

To Mrs. Rosa V. Winterburn. Upon her be Baha'u'llah!

HE IS GOD! O thou beloved maid-servant of God! Thy letter dated April 22, 1907, was received and its contents became known. In this most Merciful Age the ignorant prejudices are entirely removed, therefore the marriage of ____ to Mr. ____ is permissible, but Miss ____ must exert herself day and night so that, like the favored maid-servant of God, Mrs. Maxwell, she may guide her husband. She must not rest until she makes him her spiritual as well as physical partner in life. But the Bahai engagement is the perfect communication and the entire consent of both parties. However, they must show forth the utmost attention and become informed of one another's character, and the firm covenant made between each other must become an eternal binding, and their intentions must be everlasting affinity, friendship, unity and life. The bridegroom must, before the bridesman and a few others, say; Verily, we are content with the Will of God. And the bride must rejoin; Verily, we are satisfied with the Desire of God. This is Bahai matrimony. Regarding the marriage of Mr. ____ and Miss ____, that also, God willing, is blessed. The marriage of the Bahais means that both man and woman must become spiritually and physically united, so that they may have eternal unity throughout all the divine world and improve the spiritual life of each other. This is Bahai matrimony. Upon thee be Baha-El-Abha! (Signed) Abdul Baha Abbas. Translated by M Ahmad Esphahani,

August 1, 1907, Washington, D.C.[123]

Rosa’s book Methods in Teaching published.[124]

In 1908 George is listed as a teacher living at a home at 1814 1/2 Toberman in Los Angeles,[125] and also listed as a teacher at Polytechnic High School renting a home in Tropico, a town next to Glendale.[126]

The Winterbur's notes on their pilgrimage was collected and published while living in Los Angeles. Excerpts were published in the first published newsletter of Bahá'ís in New York in September 1908,[127] and continued into October.[128] A 32 page booklet “Tablet talks with Abdul Baha” was also published by 1908.[129]

Both George and Rosa were in the Bahá'í community of Los Angeles when it was first formed in 1909 as part of the Los Angeles, Tropico, Glendale, Long Beach Santa Monica, Ocean Park, and Pasadena communities. That was also when an "Executive Board", a precursor of a spiritual assembly, of five members was elected, and Rosa was one of them.[130] There is mention of the first Los Angeles Baha'i News of Nov 19, 1909, that mentioned the first executive board of the community including Rosa V. Winterburn.[131]

With the school year of 1909-1910 George led the drawing department of 10 others at the Polytechnic High School.[132] There was mention of the Executive Board of the Los Angeles community (and “Tropico” township) from April 1910. The community was 30 adults. The Winterburns were noted coming to meetings.[133]

For the US Census on May 9, 1910, George and Rosa were living in an apartment building on some unnamed street with seven other couples or families. They had been married 20 years though no children. He was born in England and she in Michigan. George had arrived in the US 1887 and was naturalized. He was an art teacher and she was listed as a book author.[134]

Sporadic mentions[edit]

In January 1911, George purchased some land in Sausalito.[135] This year there was a pair of books by Rosa that were published on education in 1911.[136]

George's art department included 4 others in 1911-12.[137] That year George and Rosa were among cosigners of a petition to consolidate Glendale and Tropico cities.[138] In January 1911, Rosa offered a talk to the Glendale Thursday Afternoon Club.[139]

In July 1912….[140] After the funeral for Thornton Chase on Oct 4, at the memorial on Oct 6, Rosa opened the meeting with prayers and readings from Chase's book "The Bahai Revelation" and his derivation of the Baha'i Faith based on the Bible.[141] A year later, Rosa spoke at a memorial for Harriet Wise in Pasadena Apr 5, 1913.[142]

George's profile is published in a Los Angeles newspaper in January 1914. He is portrayed, and pictured, as a staid and academic personality in a drab office until you ask him about art. "It is Mr. Winterburn of the flowing black silk necktie who has dropped a decade and a half of teaching from his shoulders and looks at you with the fire and the entusiasm of the young artist….” He is much inspired by the fresh growth after rains in the environment. He started at the Polytechnic High School in 1904 starting with three other art teachers and now heads four departmnets and four other teachers just in drawing. Still he had had time to build a collection of paiintings enough to hold an exhibition of 30 paiinings "The Age of Cultivation".[143]

In 1915 George directed a pageant of the Los Angeles school district showcasing Greek myths.[144]

George's paintings were exhibited at Moulton and Ricketts' in Chicago. In fall 1916.[145]

Rosa wrote a talk “The Unheeded Prophet” to be used by Women’s Clubs in September 1918.[146]

A curious lack of mention came in 1919 when a variety of Baha'is, including from Glendale and Los Angeles, signed a mass petition seeking 'Abdu'l-Bahá's return to America that was sent in August, but the Winterburns do not appear.[147]

Rosa was on the first Assembly of Los Angeles formed March 21, 1920.[148]

May 1920 fundraising program at Polytechnic School for printing press by Helen Ohman with George working some of the program.[149]

For the July 16, 1920, US Census George and Rosa were living at 1526 E. Maple Dr, Burbank. George had emigrated to the US in 1886, and naturalized in 1902. George was born in England, and Rosa was born in Michigan. Both were listed as public school teachers.[150]
