Macedonia is the ancient name for a region of Europe. It is in the Balkans, just north of peninsular Greece. In classical times, it was inhabited by Greek-speaking peoples, and Alexander the Great was from Macedonia. In more recent times, the Ottoman Empire controlled the whole of the Balkans, and there was an ethnically mixed population.
