The Republic of Malta is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea. Christianity is the predominant religion and Maltese and English are its official lanugages. In recent history the islands were under the rule of the British Empire until becoming independent in 1964.

The Bahá’í Faith was established in Malta in 1953 and a community was firmly established in the 1970s. The community is administrated by a single Local Spiritual Assembly.

History[edit]

In 1924 John Esslemont briefly visited Malta while traveling to the Holy Land to serve as the secretary of Shoghi Effendi.[2]

Shoghi Effendi made establishing a Bahá’í community in Malta a goal of the international Bahá’í community when he launched the Ten Year Crusade in 1953. In October that year Una Townshend pioneered to the islands,[3] and she was joined by Mary Olga Katherine Mills in December, and John Mitchell in July 1954.[4] Townshend had to depart Malta at the end of 1954 to provide care for her father, George, and Mitchell departed in 1956 after suffering a decline in his health leaving Mills as the sole pioneer.[5]

In 1972 Qudsiyyih ‘Alá’í pioneered to Malta,[6] and in March, 1973, Beatrice and Mary Newman made a travel teaching trip to the islands and decided to remain as pioneers to assist in the establishment of a Local Spiritual Assembly.[7] The Local Spiritual Assembly of Malta was successfully established in 1973,[8] and Hand of the Cause Ugo Giachery visited the community shortly after its formation.[9] By 1976 the Malta Bahá’í community had acquired a property to serve as a Ḥaẓíratu’l-Quds.[10]

In 1983 Mehrangiz Munsiff visited Malta during a travel teaching trip across Europe,[11] and Sarah Cassar, a pioneer, held a one person art show at the New Nuseum of Fine Arts in Valletta which was sponsored by the Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs.[12] In 1986 the Promise of World Peace message by the Universal House of Justice was presented to Malta's representative to the United Nations.[13]

In 1993 Bahá’ís participated in the World NGO Forum held in Malta to launch the United Nations International Year of the Family and distributed a statement prepared by the Bahá’í International Community,[14] and in 1995 representatives of Bahá’í Publishing Trusts participated in the Eleventh Malta Book Fair.[15]
