Biography[edit]

Baxter was born in approximately 1883. Her parents were missionaries and in approximately 1892 they left her in the care of extended family and she had little contact with them in her childhood. In her youth she completed a degree at Sheffield University and she became a teacher.[2]Due to ill health she had to retire from teaching at an early age and lived modestly off a pension.[3]

Baxter discovered the Bahá’í Faith through reading several Bahá’í books and she regarded herself as a Bahá’í in early 1923 although she had not yet met any Bahá’ís. She joined the Bahá’í community in London and was elected to the Local Spiritual Assembly of London and the National Spiritual Assembly of the British Isles.[3]

During the British Six Year Plan, which coordinated Bahá’í teaching efforts in the region from 1944 to 1950, Baxter pioneered to several posts spending time in Birmingham, Nottingham, Hove, Oxford, and Cardiff.[3] In September 1953 she pioneered to the Channel Islands, settling on Jersey, to achieve a goal of the Ten Year Crusade and she was named a Knight of Bahá’u’lláh.[3]

Baxter remained at her pioneer post for the rest of her life passing away in Jersey in 1969.[3] The Universal House of Justice conveyed the following message after her passing:

DEEPLY GRIEVED PASSING KNIGHT OF BAHÁ’U’LLÁH EVELYN BAXTER. AMONG FIRST PIONEERS SIX YEAR PLAN HER LONG FAITHFUL SERVICE BRITISH BAHÁ’Í COMMUNITY PROVIDES EXAMPLE DEVOTION FORTITUDE[4]
