Star of the West

Front page of Volume 6 of Star of the West.

Star of the West was a Bahá’í periodical published in the United States of America. It covered news about the international Bahá’í community, and also included provisional translations of Tablets and notes of talks by ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, although it is important to note that much of the published material has not been verified by comparison to original texts and may be in the category of pilgrim's notes.[1]

History[edit]

Star of the West was preceded by a periodical titled The Bahai Bulletin which ran from 1908 to 1909. It was founded by Bahá’ís in Chicago with Albert Windust and Gertrude Buikema assuming responsibility for editing and distribution. A Persian section was contributed by Mírzá Aḥmad Sohráb until he moved to the Holy Land, with Zia Bagdadi succeeding him as Persian editor.[2] In 1921 a Committee was appointed by the National Convention to assist with the publication of Star of the West,[3] and in 1923 the editors turned over all editorial responsibilities and valuable assets of Star of the West to the newly named National Spiritual Assembly of the United States.[4]

The first volume of Star of the West began publication in March, 1910 under the title Bahai News and the title was changed twice, first at Volume 2 to Star of the West, and a second time at volume 22 to The Bahá’í Magazine. It continued publication until March, 1935, when it was combined with another periodical titled World Unity Magazine to form the World Order Magazine.

‘Abdu’l-Bahá praised the publication, and a letter written on behalf of the Universal House of Justice has described its republication as a valuable addition to Bahá’í literature. Another letter written on behalf of the Universal House of Justice noted that passages from Star of the West can be discussed, but if they are to be included in publications the World Centre should be consulted in case original Tablets are available to be consulted and re-translated if necessary. A letter written on behalf of the Universal House of Justice in 1999 stated that it was permissible for the exact text of Star of the West to be republished in electronic format.[5]
