Coverage of the Baha'i Faith in the Daily Illini
From the Bahá'í Period of Historical mentions, Coverage of the Baha'i Faith in the Daily Illini. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has a collection the newspaper from 1874 through 1975.[1] While this is a strong limit on the coverage of the religion possible as it tended to rise into public awareness more after the impact of the persecution in Iran, more can some day come to light. Be that as it may, within the limits of OCR scanning and searching, the first mention of the Faith is when Albert Vail's Unitarian Association hosted "Amir Ullah Fareed", then student of the Medical College of the University of Illinois, who spoke on April 28 (as noted in the May 1, 1907 edition), in the Commerce Building, about the Baha'i Faith. Because of Vails association with the religion the coverage continued a very long while just because of him and the interest of some of the Association. It's live current site is at DailyIllini.com
Albert Vail[edit]
Beginnings[edit]
Most or all the early mentions of the Faith in the Daily Illini are do to meetings held by, at the time, Unitarian Minister Albert Vail. Vail had a student at the University of Illinois in Chicago and a divinity degree at Harvard[2] through which he became an ordained Unitarian minister.[3] At the age of about 22 years he moved to Urbana, Il and served a Unitarian congregation near the University, arriving around 1906.[2] Vail's Unitarian Association was formed and grew to about 85 members[2] and hosted "Amir Ullah Fareed", then student of the Medical College of the University of Illinois, who spoke on April 28 (as noted in the May 1, 1907 edition), in the Commerce Building, about the Baha'i Faith.[4] Shortly before May 5th Vail organized a "Unity Club"[5] which would play a more specific role in the beginnings of the Faith in the area.[6] By the end of 1907 the Unitarian Association grew to 120.[2]
Fall 1912/Spring 1913[edit]
Vail met Abdu'l-Baha in Malden Mass[6] in August[7] 1912 during the latter's travels in America.
- As early as January 1913 Vail is visible promulgating the religion at the Unitarian church advertised in the Daily Illini with a presentation scheduled ahead for Feb 9th.[8] Notice of the schedule continued weekly between.[9]
- Lua Getsinger came for a followup presentation at the Unity Club that regularly met there March 9th.[10]
- Other followups came the evenings of March 15[11] and 16.[12]
Fall 1913/Spring 1914[edit]
- Sept 27 Vail runs a series of talks/discussions that includes Abdu'l-Baha.[13] The next meeting noting a Baha'i topic is in February when "Kurrutu'l-Ayn"(Tahirih) co-leads the topic.[14]
Beyond a single meeting, across most of March in the Spring semester Vail covers Baha'i topics. First, he notes "Kurrutu'l-Ayn"(Tahirih) and Abdu'l-Baha twice[15] then continued covering Abdu'l-Baha[16] and then launched an evening talk series noting Abdu'l-Baha among the "great thinkers" on various subjects.[17] and then featured Abdu'l-Baha again in April[18] and again in July.[19]
He also wrote a formal summary of the religion and had it published in the July 1914 edition of The Harvard Theological Review,[20]
Fall 1914/Spring 1915[edit]
Glenn Shook, as Secretary of Vail's Unity Club, wrote to Abdu'l-Baha in October for the club - an event which the community considered the beginning of the Baha'i community since before the 1970s.[6] Vail is again presenting about the religion most of April 1915 this time with weekly evening meetings rather than a separate sermon on the religion.[21] In addition Elizabeth Hackley and Marjorie Hathorne offer talks featuring Abdu'l-Baha at the "Alethenai Literary Society" April 9,[22] (the society existed from 1871 to 1916,[23] as the women's literary club of campus.[24])
Fall 1915/Spring 1916[edit]
- Another break and again Vail is presenting on the religion in February 1916.[25] He returns to the topic in the summer, scheduling a talk July 23 with the schedule being mentioned across several weeks before.[26]
Fall 1916/Spring 1917[edit]
- Vail's talk in September is the first to mention Baha'u'llah so far found.[27]
- Vail returned to the matter of the Baha'i Faith in October 1916.[28]
Fall 1917/Spring 1918[edit]
- In Dec 1917, 10 designs for the proposed Baha'i Temple are presented by Mason Remey on campus at the Ricker Library in Engineering Hall,[29] and he was profiled in a piece in the newspaper.[30]
- In May 1918 the Daily Illini covered the resignation of Vail from his position at the Unitarian Church because of opposition to his presenting the Baha'i Faith, where he had (in the words of the paper, not Vail) "finally found in the writings and lives of two great Persian teachers the principles of a universal religion which desires to embrace men of all nations and religions in one great brotherhood."[31] Two thirds of the church opposed his approach though they didn't want him to resign over it but Vail ended the meeting instead of putting it to a vote. However though he resigned May 6th he is still presenting the Baha'i Faith as his sermon topic and evening talks as advertised May 11[32] and 12.[33] In about 1918 Vail officially joined the religion[34] and a minority of the congregation followed him.[2] The Unitarian Association also rejected joining the Universalist organization, and continued without an assigned minister relying on lay leadership except for a few months in 1920 until perhaps 1928.[2]
When Vail converted he and his wife moved to Chicago.[35] Even though he was not locally employed or lived locally, he was still very active in appearing locally and in the Daily Illini until his activity on regional and national levels precluded being locally available. And so his appearances in the Daily Illini continued for many years.
Fall 1918/Spring 1919[edit]
- Feb 1919 Vail is presenting about the religion from the Commerce Building in six lectures apparently to a large audience.[36][37] His presentation was reviewed in a third article in the Daily Illini highlighting the call for an international league of countries to settle international disputes.[38] It also points out that he had already been traveling around the country presenting the religion and that another talk would come in March. That talk was advertised as about the Baha'i views on science and religion.[39] This talk too was reviewed afterwards.[40] Another lecture was scheduled for April. The review of that talk summarized his presentation saying that (as quoted) "A league of religions is the only foundation for the League of Nations" as it would depend on a sense of universal brotherhood, and universal brotherhood depends on religious teaching "to change men's hearts", and therefore a league of religions is needed.[41]
In later April 1919 two university staff - Cora E Gray of the Department of Home Economics, and Beatrice Owens, editorial assistant of the University Press - when to the national convention in New York. This would have been the national convention at which the Tablets of the Divine Plan would have been officially presented to the community. Albert Vail is listed as being on the program for the convention.[42]
- In May Vail is back presenting lectures again in the Commerce Building and another at the home of Mrs. H. A. Harding.[43] The second lecture is about facing problems "introduced by the promoters of the Bahai movement" according to the wording of the newspaper. However the talk at the Commerce Building is canceled.[44] The next report in June says he became ill, however another set of meetings are scheduled in June at the Commerce Building and Mrs. H. A. Harding's.[45] This time the topic at the Hardings is "How to know a Universal Educator when he comes".
Fall 1919/Spring 1920[edit]
In September he is again scheduled to give a talks in the Commerce Building.[46]
Vail went on pilgrimage to Haifa in October 1919.[47] While he was away Mary Hanford Ford gave a presentation in the Commerce Building.[48]
- He was back and presenting about his pilgrimage January 1920 - he was not noted as "Reverend" for the first time[49] though the follow up after his talk did.[50] In the follow up it was said his talk reviewed his experience in Palestine, as it was then called, which would be gone into detail over a further series of talks. It also noted he had been a minister at the Unitarian Church for 12 years which would place him there, before his resignation, at about 1902. Indeed the first Daily Illini reference to him found so far is from 1906.[51] His next talk on campus was about two weeks later in late January,[52] wherein he dwelt on the gather of Christians, Jews, Moslems, and Buddhists at the home of Abdu'l-Baha. A second meeting was again scheduled at the home of Mrs. Harding.
- Vail's next talk is set in later March in the Commerce Building was going to be on the development of peace.[53] The second talk at Mrs. Hardings was going to be on Baha'i interpretation of Christian prophecy of the times.
- In April his next talk was on the Baha'i teaching on the unity of science and religion at the Commerce Building.[54] The story also mentions Vail about to leave on a trip to the east coast giving talks in various cities. However this was, in fact, a start of an extended tour often associated with Louis Gregory as paid traveling teachers of the religion, a position that began circa 1920 and continued until 1932.[55]
- May 11 there is a talk on campus and on the 12th off campus.[56]
- July 8 a talk is noted as part of a series.[57]
Fall 1920/Spring 1921[edit]
- Another series is noted in November.[58]
- January marks another series.[59]
- Another in April[60] when it is also noted another Urbana Baha'i couple go on pilgrimage - Mr and Mrs Jacob Kunz.[61] In May Dr. Fazel, a touring professor from Iran, gives several talks on the religion.[62]
Fall 1921/Spring 1922[edit]
- Vail returns in Oct. starting a series of talks[63] and another in started in November and extended into Dec.[64] and then into January.[65] A talk in February (apparently badly rendered) may have been started by Professor Jacob Kunz on science and religion.[66] Vail returned in March[67] and April.[68] Later in April E. B. Jacobsen died from complications from exposure to poison gas received in service in WWI and received a Baha'i funeral.[69] Vail continues talks in May.[70]
Fall 1922/Spring 1923[edit]
Vail continued talks on campus in Oct[71] Dec.[72] Martha Root returns in January.[73] Mrs. A. J. Kemper substitutes for an ill Vail in February[74] but he returns in March[75] and continues into April.[76] In May Dr. Fazel returns.[77] Vail continued in July.[78]
Fall 1923/Spring 1924[edit]
Val appears again in Oct.[79] Corrine True appears next in early Nov[80] and Mason Remey following up.[81] and events held by Mrs. Harding[82] and Remey.[83] There is a Baha'i sale of imported art for a Christmas event held in late November[84] and into December[85] partially for the benefit of a NC school in Crossnore NC - it is unclear at this time what school this might have been - and partially for the building of the Baha'i Temple at Wilmette.[86] In mid-December Vail returns for a talk[87] that also noted he was the editor of the Star of the West and would have a second engagement at the home of Mrs. Kunz.[88] The talk on campus was profiled afterwards.[89]
In Feb he gave another series talks[90] and was again reviewed afterwards.[91] Another in April[92] and in May.[93] Another talk came in July.[94]
Fall 1924/Spring 1925[edit]
- In Nov 9 Keith Ransom-Kehler gave a talk.[95]
- In December the (now called) "annual Bahai Christmas sale" occurred[96] between talks by Vail.[97]
- In January Vail continues monthly talks[98] then Feb,.[99] March[100] Again it is in the Commerce Building this time noting how science without religion was disrupting the world and other aspects of the Baha'i Faith to promulgate peace.
- In April 1925 Robert S Agnew gives a talk on the religion in the Commerce Building.[101] Vail returns in May.[102] Corrine True talked in late May.[103]
Fall 1925/Spring 1926[edit]
- Vail next presents on the religion in October[104] and then in November - and for the first time an couple paragraphs portrait of the religion is printed in the newspaper albeit as an advertisement.[105] The early Dec Bazaar fundraiser was undertaken to support Baha'i activies.[106] Next comes a notice of weekly meetings before mid Dec and a talk by Vail.[107]
- January 1926 he gave a talk at Lincoln Hall - and this may be the first time "Baha'i" was spelled with the apostrophe.[108] The talk was previewed in an article[109] and there was artist rendering of the Temple[110] and reviewed afterwards.[111]
- In July 1926 he again was in the news with a portrayal of the religion in print for his talk having returned from a trip around the Western US promoting the religion.[114] Marie of Romania is noted.
Fall 1926/Spring 1927[edit]
- Vail initiated a series of talks in late September[115] which continued into October, with coverage noting a tour of the Western US and anticipates a tour of the East that coming Winter.[116]
Dr. Susan Moody was in town from Iran for a talk Nov 13,[117] with Vail returning for talks by late November.[118]
In early January Vail speaks at the Chaperson's Club at the university.[119] In late January 1927 it isn't Vail that speaks on campus but Fanny Knobloch,[120] a weekly meeting is noted in the home of Mrs. Harding[121] while Knobloch gave a talk before traveling and then Louis Gregory gave a couple of talks.[122] Mrs. F. M Leslie lead the meeting on Feb 17.[123] In early March it is Johanna Schubarth mentioned in the Daily Illini who speaks near campus.[124] Mrs. Ellery Paine and Mrs Walter Gaines lead meeting in the home of Mrs. Emma Henry.[125] Vail makes his return appearance in mid March on campus,[126] with Mrs. H. A. Harding hosting the daytime meeting of the club.[127] Mrs J. T. Tykociner held a meeting at Mrs. Harding's home in later March,[128] and at the very end of March by Corrine True[129] and a reception afterwards.[130] Vail returns in early April[131] followed by talks by Mrs. Harding,[132] Mrs. Kunz,[133] and Mrs. Snyder.[134]
- Come early June 1927 and Vail returns for a talk on campus.[135][136] He noted at the time there were 69 organized communities of Baha'is in the US and Canada at the time. However in mid June Mrs. Jacob Kunz gave a talk on Abu Fadl's "Brillian Proof" near campus,[137] while Vail returns at the end of June.[138]
Fall 1927/Spring 1928[edit]
- Vail next appears in Sept 1927 after a summer at Green Acre,[139] and then another couple talks in October before heading east in November.[140] While he is away, Mrs. George Busey talks at a meeting off campus.[141]
- Horace Holley gives a talk in January 1928 on campus - meanwhile Mrs. Ellerry Paine(who had become a Baha'i in 1915 as a member of the Unity Club)[142] and Mrs. Harding are at a Chicago conference of Baha'is.[143]
- Vail returned for a pair of talks in March after returning from a tour of Eastern cities.[144] But this would prove to be his last talk in the Urbana/University of Illinois area.
Sporadic mention[edit]
After this period of sometimes more than weekly notices in the Daily Illini about Baha'i meetings on campus and the rise of the Baha'i community on and near campus, a protracted period of sporadic mentions of the religion occur.
- In May 1928 Dr. Zia Bagdadi gives a talk on campus.[145]
- In July 1928 Ruth Moffett talks on campus.[146]
- In March 1930 there is a note that a Hundu publisher was to give a talk and there was mention he had met Abdu'l-Baha among others.[147] In May Corrine True off campus talk about the Baha'i Temple was noted in the Daily Illini and the story also noted two former staff working with the Baha'is - F. H. Newell, former head of the Department of Civil Engineering, and Allan B. McDaniel, of the College of Engineerings, then serving as chair of the National Spiritual assembly of the Baha'is of the United States and Canada.[148]

530 East Green St Center[edit]
Spring Semester 1936[edit]
1936 was a banner year for the visibility of rising activity on campus in that a new Baha'i Center was acquired near campus at which students took active roles running. The year begins in January 1936 when another former Unitarian minister convert to the religion, Howard Colby Ives, gives a talk on campus and a dinner held at Garreta Busby's afterwards.[156] In February Mabel Paine wrote a Letter to the Editor in support of the Baha'i view on approaching peace by quoting several paragraphs from an article in World Order.[157] In June Mrs Ives, wife of Howard Colby Ives, gave several talks on and off campus.[158]
