Ato Belete Worku is an Ethiopian Bahá’í who served as an Auxiliary Board member for Africa.

Background[edit]

Worku was serving as an Auxiliary Board member as of 1966 and attended that years National Convention for North East Africa,[1] and in 1967 he participated in a Bahá’í Intercontinental Conference for Africa held in Kampala, Uganda.[2]

In April 1969 he addressed the North East Africa Convention in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, speaking on aspects of teaching the Faith and the need for mutual encouragement,[3] and in June he participated in a twelve day gathering of Counselors and Board members for Central and East Africa held partially in Addis Ababa and partially in Nairobi, Kenya.[4] In October Worku and his wife accompanied Rúḥíyyih Khánum to a meeting with a daughter of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia.[5]

In 1979 the National Spiritual Assembly of Ethiopia appointed Worku, who was no longer serving as Board member, to a delegation it tasked with presenting a Bahá’í inspired literacy teaching aid to the Ethiopian Minister of Education and United Nations officials in Ethiopia.[6] As of 1980 he was serving on the National Spiritual Assembly of Ethiopia as treasurer.[7] In November 1983 he represented the Bahá’í International Community at the Seventh United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders held in Addis Ababa.[8]
