Montenegro is a country in the Balkans in Southeast Europe. Christianity is the predominant religion and the official language is Montenegrin.

The area was part of the Ottoman Empire from the fifteenth century but became semi-autonomous in 1696. It became recognised as independent in 1878 and became a Kingdom in 1910. It became a constituent of Yugoslavia in 1918 following the First World War and achieved independence alongside Serbia as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992 which became known as Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. Montenegro became an independent nation in its own right in 2006.

A Bahá’í community has not been well established in Montenegro. In 1991 a Regional Teaching Committee for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro & Serbia was established to coordinate efforts to establish the Faith in what had been Yugoslavia,[2] and in 1993 the Universal House of Justice made the National Spiritual Assembly of Austria responsible for overseeing efforts to establish the Faith in Serbia and Montenegro.[3]
