Khadíjih Khánum was the mother of Bahá’u’lláh. Little is known about her life.
Background[edit]
Khadíjih was born into the Namadsáb tribe which resided near the city of Tákur.[1] She married at a young age and while the name and occupation of her first husband are not known it is known that they had three children; Sakínih Khánum, Mírzá Muhammad-‘Alí, and Sughrá Khánum.[2]
At some point Khadíjih remarried to Mírzá Buzurg and around the same time her daughter Sakínih Khánum married one of his brothers.[2] Khadíjih and Buzurg had five children who were Sárih Khánum, Mirza Mihdi, Bahá’u’lláh, Mírzá Músá, and Nisá’ Khánum.[3] In 1835 Buzurg began struggling financially due to a series of hostile action taken against him by Ḥájí Mírzá Áqásí, the Grand Vizier of Iran, and he had to sell the properties in Tehran where his family was residing. Bahá’u’lláh rented a property near the Shimírán Gate of Tehran and Khadíjih moved to live with her son along with Buzurg's other children and wives.[4]
It is not known exactly when Khadíjih passed away although historian Baharieh Rouhani Ma’ani speculates that she was still alive in the early 1870's based on the wording of a Tablet revealed by Bahá’u’lláh for one of His sisters. When she passed away Bahá’u’lláh revealed a Tablet of Visitation in her honor.[5]
