Kevin Locke (June 23, 1954 - September 30, 2022) was an American Bahá’í who served on the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States. In his career he worked to preserve Lakota art and language.
Biography[edit]
Locke was born on Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota and was a member of the Hunkpapa community and Standing Rock Sioux Tribe of the of Lakota. His parents were Patricia McGillis and Charles Locke.[1]
After completing his schooling Locke completed a bachelor's degree in education at the University of North Dakota and a master's in education administration at the University of South Dakota and began working in the field. He was an active member of the Lakota community and learnt how to play the traditional wood flute and began learning and preserving cultural music. He also learnt and began performing hoop dancing.[1]
In the late 1970's Locke became a Bahá’í and was an active member of the community. Around this time he retired from his education career and dedicated himself to preserving Lakota culture particularly through performing hoop dancing and he became a member of the Board of the Lakota Language Consortium, which was dedicated to preserving the Lakota language.[1] In 1988 Locke was appointed as an Auxiliary Board member,[2][3] however he retired from the position the following year as he was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States.[4]
Locke passed away in 2022.[1]
