Dr. Joshua Lincoln is an American Bahá’í who served as Secretary-General of the Bahá’í International Community from 2013 to 2019.
Background[edit]
Lincoln was born into a Bahá’í family and his parents are Albert and Joan Lincoln.[1] He was born in the United States but his family pioneered to French speaking Africa in approximately 1972 and he was raised in central Africa.[2]
Lincoln returned to the United States for his higher education and completed a degree in international politics at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and a PhD at Tufts University in Massachusetts. He began his professional career working as an academic and policy researcher for several universities and think tanks and also for the World Bank.[3]
In 2000 Lincoln began working at the United Nations serving in several posts including as the secretary of the Director-General of the Geneva United Nations office and as a senior officer in the Executive Office of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon located in New York. He was also often stationed in Africa on assignments for the United Nations.[3] In 2013 Lincoln left his position with the United Nations and moved to Haifa, Israel, when he was appointed the Secretary-General of the Bahá’í International Community.[2] He served in the role until stepping down in 2019.[4]
As of 2022 Lincoln is affiliated with the Centre for International Law and Governance at Tufts University as a non-residential Senior Fellow and is serving as a director of the Global Governance Forum.[3]
