Jinab-i-Maryam
Jinab-i-Maryam (c. 1826 - c. 1867), granted the title Al-Varaqatu’l-Hamrá’ meaning the Crimson Leaf by Bahá’u’lláh,[1] was a cousin of Bahá’u’lláh who was a devoted Bahá’í.
Biography[edit]
Maryam was born in approximately 1826. Her mother was Malik Nisa’ Khanum, the sister of Mírzá Buzurg, the father of Bahá’u’lláh, and her father was Mírzá Karim-i Namadsab who was from the same tribe as Khadíjih Khánum the mother of Bahá’u’lláh. She had a sister, Mahd-i-‘Ulya, and a brother, Mirza Muhammad-i-Vazir. She was raised in the village Fuyul which is southeast of Takur and may have been born there. She learnt how to read and write at some point.[2]
Maryam married her cousin Hají Mírzá Riḍa-Quli between 1842 and 1844 and they established their residence in a house he owned in Tehran and they had a daughter named Zahra. Her daughter married Mirza Isma‘il the son of Sárih Khánum.[3] She became a dedicated Bábí in the 1840's being introduced to the religion by Bahá’u’lláh,[4] and when Bahá’u’lláh was released from imprisonment in the Siyah Chal in 1853 Maryam offered to house Him. Her husband never publicly identified as a Bábí or Bahá’í but he consented and Bahá’u’lláh was nursed back to health over several weeks in their home before being exiled to Baghdad.[5]
Maryam maintained a correspondence with Bahá’u’lláh after His exiles and received several Tablets from Him.[6] During the 1850's she intended to travel to Baghad to visit Bahá’u’lláh but was unable to do so. She tried to visit Him again after He had been exiled to Adrianople in the 1860's but was prevented from doing so by her sister-in-law Shah-Sultan Khanum and possibly her husband.[7]
Maryam passed away in approximately 1867 and Bahá’u’lláh revealed a Tablet of Visitation in her honor.[7]
