Ruins of the House of Amru’lláh, c. 1930's

The House of Amru’lláh, or House of God's Command, was a large mansion in Adrianople near the Mosque of Sultan Salim where Bahá’u’lláh resided. It was while in this House that Mírzá Yaḥyá became openly hostile Bahá’u’lláh.

History[edit]

The House of Amru’lláh consisted of three stories and thirty rooms with a Turkish bath contained within the house and it had running water in its kitchen.[1]

When Bahá’u’lláh and His companions first arrived in Adrianople they resided in a caravenserai for three nights before renting a house in the northeastern Muradiyyih quarter of the city however the house could only house His family with other companions staying in a nearby inn. After a short time the family moved to a slightly larger house in the same quarter.[2] After ten months Bahá’u’lláh decided a larger and more accessible house was required and the House of Amru’lláh was located with Bahá’u’lláh personally inspecting it accompanied by Mírzá Yaḥyá.[1]

Bahá’u’lláh moved His residence to the house in approximately June 1864,[3] with His family occupying the top floor of the building, his brother Mírzá Muḥammad-Quli's family occupying the second, and servants of the household occupying the ground floor. Nearby houses were found and rented for Mírzá Yaḥyá and Mírzá Músá and their families however meals for their households were prepared at the House of Amru’lláh and delivered to them.[1]

In 1865 Mírzá Yaḥyá began taking more openly hostile actions against Bahá’u’lláh including inviting Him to his home and poisoning Him,[4] and in March 1866 Bahá’u’lláh left the house moving into seclusion in the House of Riḍá Big accompanied only by His family, Mírzá Muḥammad-Quli, and Mírzá Áqá Ján, an event which came to be known as the Most Great Separation.[5][6] In approximately March 1867 Bahá’u’lláh resumed residence in the House of Amru’lláh,[7] however the owner of the building sold it within six months and Bahá’u’lláh moved to the House of Izzat Áqá for the rest of His time in Adrianople.[8] Adib Taherzadeh estimates that Bahá’u’lláh moved to the House of Izzat Áqá in approximately July 1867.[9]

By the 1930's the building had fallen into ruin,[10] and by the mid-1990's it had been completely demolished with a shopping center being constructed on the site.[11]
