This photo from October 1933 shows the ruins of the House of ‘Izzat Aqa in Edirne, Turkey, the final home of Baha’u’llah in the city.

The House of Izzat Áqá was a property in Adrianople near the Mosque of Sultan Salim where Bahá’u’lláh resided in the final year He lived in the city.

History[edit]

The House of Izzat Áqá was constructed in the 1860's and was located next to a river and also some orchards. It had spacious rooms in its interior and a smaller outer area with a garden which contained several trees and flowerbeds.[1]

Bahá’u’lláh moved His residence to the building in approximately July 1867.[2] He moved to the house from the House of Amru’lláh which He had returned to in March 1867 after previously vacating it in March 1866 due to the intense hostility of Mírzá Yaḥyá who had attempted to poison Him.[3] The Bahá’í's of Adrianople rented a property near the house.[1]

Bahá’u’lláh remained in the house of Izzat Áqá until He was exiled to ‘Akká in August 1868.[2] As of 1933 it had fallen into ruin,[4] but by the mid-1990's the property was owned by the Bahá’í community and work was being done to reconstruct the building to its original state.[5]
