Gila Michael Bahta (d. 2010) was an Eritrean Bahá’í who served as a National Spiritual Assembly member and Continental Counselor in Africa.
Background[edit]
Bahta became a practicing lawyer in his youth.[1] He was introduced to the Bahá’í Faith in the mid-1940's by Sabri and Fahima Elias,[2] and assisted with successful efforts to proclaim the Faith to Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia at some point in the 1940's or early 1950's.[1]
In late 1958 Bahta represented the Bahá’í community at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa held in Addis Ababa.[3] As of 1961 he had been elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of North East Africa,[4] and as of 1966 he was serving as chairman of the body.[5] In 1963 he chaired a session at the First Bahá’í World Congress.[6] In 1970 he made arrangements for Rúḥíyyih Khánum to have an audience with Emperor Haile Selassie and accompanied her when she met with the Emperor.[7]
In 1975 the North East Africa Assembly was reconstituted as the National Spiritual Assembly of Ethiopia and Bahta was serving on the Ethiopian Assembly as of 1977.[8] In 1983 the Universal House of Justice appointed Bahta as a Continental Counselor for Africa,[9] and in 1985 he was reappointed for a full five year term.[10] He was appointed for a second term in 1990 completing his service as Counselor in 1995.[11]
