Ernest Gregory (1899 - April 21, 1978) was an English Bahá’í who serveda as a National Spiritual Assembly and Auxiliary Board member.
Biography[edit]
Gregory was born in 1899. He was an active Freemason in his youth. In his personal life he married and had a son however his wife had passed by the early 1950's. In 1951 he became a Bahá’í in Sheffield and was the third person to declare in the city. He resigned from Freemasonry after becoming a Bahá’í and a letter written on behalf of Shoghi Effendi spoke positively about him setting a good example by doing so.[1]
In 1954 Gregory was elected to the National Spiritual Assembly of the British Isles and he was also appointed to the National Teaching Committee serving as the bodies chairman during the Ten Year Crusade. In 1959 he remarried to a fellow member of the National Teaching Committee named Joan.[1] In 1963 he was appointed to the Auxiliary Board for Europe as a Board member for Propagation. His area of jurisdiction was the north and midlands of England, the western and northern islands of Scotland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. He traveled across his area of jurisdiction extensively serving as Board member until 1974.[1]
Gregory and his wife moved to the Holy Land in 1974 and began serving at the World Centre. He served up until his passing on the first day of Ridvan in 1978.[1] The Universal House of Justice conveyed the following message after his passing:
ANNOUNCE PASSING TO ABHA KINGDOM MORNING OF FIRST DAY OF RIDVAN DISTINGUISHED SERVANT BAHAULLAH ERNEST GREGORY STOP HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION GROWTH BRITISH BAHAI COMMUNITY AS MEMBER MANY YEARS NATIONAL SPIRITUAL ASSEMBLY AND LATER MEMBER AUXILIARY BOARD ENSURES HIM HIGH PLACE THAT COMMUNITYS ANNALS STOP HIS STERLING QUALITIES ENDEARED HIM TO ALL AT WORLD CENTRE FAITH WHERE HIS LOSS KEENLY FELT STOP ADVISE BRITISH COMMUNITY JOIN PRAYERS THANKSGIVING HIS LIFE PROGRESS HIS SOUL.[2]
