Bristol is a city in the south-western region of England. During the Middle Ages, it became, in size, England's second city. Primarily, its importance was as a port, accessible to the sea through the tidal entrance to the River Avon. (This is not the same river as the one flowing through Stratford-on-Avon.) By the twentieth century, its importance as a port had declined, as ports such as Liverpool and Southampton could take bigger ships than could get into Bristol. Nonetheless, Bristol is frequently regarded as the main candidate as the capital of any initiative to create a stronger regional system in England.
Bristol was visited by 'Abdu'l-Bahá during his visits to England, and he stayed at the home of Major Wellesley Tudor Pole, near the Clifton suspension bridge. In late 2014, the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the United Kingdom announced that it had acquired part of this building.
Bristol has a Bahá’í Centre, and is the home of Intellect Books, which was founded by a Bahá’í and publishes illustrated works of Bahá’í Scripture.
