Bridgeport is a city in the U.S. state of Connecticut.

Efforts to establish a Bahá’í community in Bridgeport began in the 1950s and found success in the early 1970s.

History[edit]

When the Ten Year Crusade began in 1953 there were no Bahá’ís in Bridgeport and establishing a Bahá’í community in the city by 1963 was made one of the Crusade goals for the American Bahá’ís. Jean Silver, Christine Ivanoff, and Caroline Stewart pioneered to Bridgeport in late 1953 initiating efforts to establish the Faith in the city.[1]

In 1956 Auxiliary Board members William deForge and Margery McCormick both visited Bridgeport to assist with teaching efforts,[2] in 1957 the Bahá’ís of Connecticut funded a public meeting in Bridgeport held to celebrate World Religion Day,[3] and also in 1957 the Bahá’í Faith was mentioned in an article about Israel published in the Bridgeport Sunday Post.[4]

As of the early 1970's a Bahá’í Group had been formed in Bridgeport however it remained too small to establish a Local Spiritual Assembly. In 1972 the Bahá’í community of Stamford launched a mass teaching project in Bridgeport with dozens of Bahá’ís visiting to teach the Faith every weekend over an extended period. The project resulted in thirteen declarations and the establishment of the Bridgeport Local Spiritual Assembly.[5]

In 1980 the Bridgeport Local Spiritual Assembly adopted the teaching goal of establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly in Trumbull.[6]
