Bradford is a City in West Yorkshire, England.
History[edit]
Isobel Slade visited Bradford to teach the Bahá’í Faith in 1931. She held meetings where addresses on the Faith were given which were well received.[1] Groups for studying the Bahá'í writings began to be formed in Bradford in the 1930's and by 1932 there was at least one Bahá'í resident of Bradford.[2][3] Arthur Norton and his wife Marion were among the earliest Bahá’ís of Bradford.[4]
The first formal public Bahá'í meeting in Bradford was held on July 3, 1932, and it was attended by representatives of several religious and pacifist organizations in the City. Mary Hanford Ford gave a talk titled Disarmament a Divine Command at the meeting.[5] By 1938 there were four declared Bahá'ís living in Bradford[6] and the nine member Local Spiritual Assembly of Bradford was established on April 21, 1939.[7] The Bradford Assembly also administrated Bahá'í activities in Leeds until the 1940's.[8]
The Bradford Bahá'í community temporarily lost a number of its members to National Service during the Second World War, more than any other British community.[9]
The annual British Bahá'í Summer School was held in Bradford from July 26 to August 4, 1941. The city was chosen to host the Summer School as it had a Bahá'í Center.[10] In 1944 an exhibition commemorating the Bahá'í Centenary was displayed in a shop on a main street of Bradford,[11][12] and in December, 1947 the Bradford Bahá'í Youth Committee was formed due to an increase in Youth activities.[13]
