Authors Categories
I'm confused about the various Authors categories. From the top-level Categories page I can go to People and then Authors. This gives me a page at the URL http://www.bahaikipedia.org/Category:Authors that lists only 12 well-known Baha'i authors. However, there are many more authors listed under the URL http://www.bahaikipedia.org/Authors. It's not clear to me where this is linked from, if anywhere. And then there is a list of "Authors missing important information", at URL http://www.bahaikipedia.org/Category:Authors_missing_important_information. Again, this doesn't seem to be linked in from any other categories, although most of the authors in the system have a link back to that page from their pages.
It seems to me there should just be one Authors page, accessible from People/Authors, and that if a list is to be maintained of "Authors missing important information" this should probably be a subcategory of Authors. When information is added, an author could then be removed from that list and placed on the main list.
Or am I missing something here? Thanks!
--Dale
- Hi Dale,
- This is a result of my initial inexperience with mediawiki software during the very beginning states of this project. Books and authors were the first information to be added before I had a good understanding of how categories work (and how easy the are) so I had Authors almost finished before learning about Categories. When I realized that maintaining that page would be difficult I started Category:Authors with the plan to move everyone there, just have not done it yet. Part of the reason is that on Authors the information is displayed very nicely, all on one page. If you move to categories it sorts by last name but displays the first name first. So it's not a good way to list people, in my opinion. All this are the reasons for what you see, so I'd appreciate any feedback you have. As for authors missing information category, that can easily be added to Category:Authors or somewhere else.
- David 00:28, 10 October 2007 (MDT)
- David,
- In looking at how author pages are coded to put them into the Category:Authors list, it looks to me like the only way to get around having them print first/last (although they are sorted on last name) would be to recreate the author pages themselves to have the last name first. That would be a lot of work, so I would probably suggest just letting it go as is. It may not be ideal, but it works well enough, I think. About the only other alternative would be to place the non-category author index page under Category:Authors, but that just introduces an extra level of structure. I don't think I'd recommend that.
- If you want, I could work on adding category links to the uncategorized authors as I have time. The "missing information" list also doesn't have them sorted by last name, which should be fixed.
- It might also be helpful to have a statement of what kind of "important information" is needed for authors in order to get them off of the "missing" list. I was thinking of adding some biographical info for myself and Kathy (although I read somewhere that that's not good form, but I don't think anyone other than us knows enough about us to add such information!), but wasn't quite sure how to go about it.
- Hi Dale,
- Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yes you are right that about that being the only way to get the last names to show up first, but it is not worth it. The question remains if we should keep Authors after getting everyone in Category:Authors, what do you think? As for that "important information" I really have no idea, haha. For this project I am sure others would agree that it is ok to add information about yourself and your wife. I will work on getting authors sorted in "missing information" by last name. The problem comes up because they are added to that category by a template. I think wikipedia has solved this with something called "Default sort" so I will see about doing that here.
- Regards, David 19:34, 10 October 2007 (MDT)
- David,
- I don't see much use in keeping Authors once Category:Authors has been updated. For one thing, it would open up a possibility for errors since every author would have to be added to two places instead of one. It might also be confusing to users to have two pages doing the same basic thing.
- I noticed that the individual author pages have what I think is a template as the first line. If so, can we modify that template to automatically place authors into Category:Authors? If so, that might be the best way to get everyone moved over there. If not, I will be happy to work on manually coding them when necessary. I'd like to learn a bit about templating and see how this one works, if possible. Thanks!

David,
I'm trying to reply to your last post in the above question, but getting a spam reject. Not sure why.
Dale
- Hi Dale,
- This wiki has been receiving a lot of spam lately so we implemented a few features that should help stop it. Our only other option was to stop anonymous editing all together, and I don't want to do that. Anyway the problem has been fixed and you should no longer be receiving that message. - David,
- Thanks!

Esoteric meanings in Baha'i faith ... ooops I clearly should have posted this in another section... ideas?
Hello... I'm a new potential Bahai, who has recently been attending educational classes on the religion with a friend of mine. I come from a strictly atheist - although deeply philosohpical/metaphyically-inclined - intellectual background, but have recently gone through experiences which have inevitably led me to - at least - a desire to the outward practice of Baha'i faith... mainly as a 'vehicle' for connecting, on a structured, regular basis, with the deep, unknowable truth.
My interpretations of Baha'u'llah's teachings, however, i doubt would be shared by many - if any - other Bahai's around. I feel that there is definitely a way of 'mining' Baha'i teachings for gems that are helpful towards one's own life, but that, given that the region is self-admittedly relative, adapted to the time and place in which it was founded, that many of the outward themes are more 'crowd-control' than anything else - which, for some reason, I'm perfectly OK with.
The main issue is that, I do not know whether, as a radically esoteric interpreter of religious 'revelation,' - as well as what has become an utter disinterest in convincing others of my own way of thinking - I would be accepted fully into the Baha'i community. Perhaps this mind-body that is 'me' is simply too stubbornly metaphysical to take someone like Baha'u'llah at his *literal* word. Is this problematic from the view of the community itself. Any thoughts?
- Hello,
I don't feel quite qualified to answer you since I've had to use the dictionary to understand what you're talking about but I'd suggest you read Shoghi Effendi's God Passes By. If you have a question about a specific situation or quote or something like that I'd probably be of more help.

New page creation
Hi! I would like to create a new page on the Chinese version of Bahaikipedia but have no idea on how to do it? I have went into the tutorial part but it then links to wikipedia. Please advice, thanks!
- Hello, we were having a bad spam problem there so those features were disabled temporarily. I have removed the restrictions for now, but please create an account there so I can restore them until a more permanent solution is found. Best, David 14:30, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
- Cool! Thanks, David! :)
- No problem, I'm trying to upgrade the anti-spam now so I hope I don't break anything :) David 19:12, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
I think you have break something there?? I don't see my page creation appeared there! ??
- Can you be more specific? What page were you trying to create? Did it ask you to answer a question before submitting the page? David 04:25, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi :)! Thank you for your interest to contribute to this project! Welcome! I've just created a new page there today, and things turn out alright now! :) Well, only logged in users can create an article. In the search box to the left, type the title of the new article, then click Go. If the Search page reports "No page with that title exists" then you can click the red "Create the page" link to start editing your article. So, kindly sign up as a user first as David has suggested you. Hope we've answered you! :) By the way, if you like to communicate with me in Chinese, you may leave your message in the Help desk in the Chinese version also. Happy editing! :) Alicia 15:00, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Permission to upload images on Wiki Commons.
Hello!I would like to ask if you could give me permission to upload the BahaiKipedia images on Wiki Commons. My only purpose is to provide more information about the Bahá´í Faith and teach the Faith through the Wikipedia articles.I´ve written most of the Bahá´í articles in the Portuguese Wikipedia and so far I was only able to upload the images that are past 70 years of age. So I would be really greatful if you could help me on this, specially since uploading images isn´t my expertise when it comes on all the copyrights system.Pioneiro09 11:46, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Pioneiro09, if you look at my user page on Bahaikipedia Commons: c:User:David you will find there a number of images I have taken myself and are available in the public domain. All those images can be uploaded to Wikipedia commons without worry. As for all the other images on Bahaikipedia, many come from wikipedia (so you should be able to use them already) and others from media.bahai.org which would not be acceptable to wikipedia. If you'd like me to participate in the actual uploading to Wikipedia commons I am happy to do that, I've been meaning to get around to it myself actually. Just point me in the direction of the images you'd like. Best, David 15:31, 6 September 2008 (UTC)
Well first I apologize that I couldn't reply any sooner due to some disfunctions in my pc, but thanks for offering to upload the images for me. This really means a lot for me and of course for the promotion of the Faith. Since I mostly translate English articles into Portuguese articles I even post the same images as well but I was only able to do so with pictures older than 70 years of age. Anyway the articles I wrote where I tried to post the image were:
-Universal House of Justice (history section) if you don't know portuguese than you can write in the image "Os primeiros membros da Casa Universal de Justiça em 1963."
-Hands of the Cause you can write in the image "Mãos da Causa reunidos em abril de 1963."
-Both Martha Root and Rúhíyyih Khanum you can just add their names in the images.
Anyway any doubt or help you need just let me know. You can position the images just like the English articles or where you think it looks best.Any suggestion just let me know ok.Again thank you a lot! .Pioneiro09 11:46, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Pioneiro, can you bring DF me up to speed on what you've tried to do already with regard to adding images from Wikipedia? Otherwise I won't know where to start to help you. It looks like all the images in question are uploaded only to the English Wikipedia because they are all used under "fair use" guidelines. In the English Wikipedia the template used is here: [1], do you have something like that in Portuguese?
- If you do not you'll need to go about creating it before the images could be used without getting deleted, though you can try without a template and just include the "fair use rational" which basically states in Portuguese "There are no similar free images available, it is being used for informative purposes only, inclusion adds significantly to the article". I can try uploading the images and adding them but since I don't know Portuguese I won't be able to write the fair use rationale, you'll need to do that. See here: [2] [3] [4] and ([5] best example). All those images require that fair use rationale. Until you write one you can't use the images, but you just need to copy I think what's on the English for the reason it can be used. Let me know if any of this makes sense, or if there is anything else I can do. As for the Universal House of Justice, you can also use these images: ([6] mine) or [7].
- Best, David 20:02, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
Hi David, thanks for the advices. Anyway I saw something in the Portuguese Commons in the uploading section and it is written "Important Note: The Wikipedia in Porteguese and the Wikimedia Commons don permit the usage of media files (such as images and audios) under the argumente of fair use." What would you recommend to do with this statement? With regards, Pioneiro09 12:39, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Pioneiro, that's strange, considering Wikipedia is all run by the same foundation. So on the local version of Wikipedia you're looking at you can't upload images under the claim of 'fair use'? I know you can't on Commons. That's really too bad, and I find it hard to believe considering so much is used with that claim, images of book covers, cd covers, photos of people. If you can't upload under 'fair use' then you can't use the images. I'd suggest just getting as much content about the Baha'i Faith on the Portuguese Wikipedia as possible, maybe things will change in the future. If you run into a road block you can always start Bahaikipedia in Portuguese, hah ;) Best. David 15:46, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the help a lot. Yes, unfortunately it's harder than I taught but I'm happy to continue the writing of the Bahá’í articles since the really important thing for me is the content. I might try to see with some of the Portuguese Wikipedia administrators or maybe some Bahá’í website who might display images for me in a next occasion. And oh yes, I'm really considering to start a Bahaikipedia in Portuguese you can really count on me if you want. With regards, Pioneiro09 00:16, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Pioneiro, that really sounds great. Good luck with your work there and if you want me to open a Portuguese Bahaikipedia please just message me and I'll do that. Best, David 04:36, 19 September 2008 (UTC)
Help with adding infoboxes?
Hi David,I've been trying to add either the Infobox Country or Person and for some reason(even when I try to copy the same templates) in Portuguese Bahaikipedia, it never shows the box around the information and it doesen't go to the right of the article it just stays on top.I just a wonder what should I do to fix this?
Thanks Pioneiro09 13:50, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Pioneiro, the solution was in adding lines of code to MediaWiki:Monobook.css and MediaWiki:Common.css in pt.bahaikipedia. That got it working but I'd suggest you look at the pt.wikipedia.org way of doing it (here) to see if that way is better or not. It may be easier then trying to work with what I've created :)

About Adding New article
Hello,
I am proud to say that I believe I am the first vandal to have reverted my own vandalism in the history of Internet!
I decided that we should not offend people or their religions. Better to work for peace. Also, can I add an article like "Muslim reaction to Bahai"? Thanks,
Yahya Al-Shiddazi —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.138.47.16 (talk • contribs) .
- Hello, that's the purpose of this wiki and you're most welcome to create that page. However I'd suggest placing it on Wikipedia instead as Wikipedia has many editors that can help with formatting, interlinking, finding content and so-on. David 10:41, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
adding Artists to Bahaikipedia?
Hello, I work for Kevin Locke, Lakota Hoop Dancer, storyteller, flutist, educator and Baha'i. I am working on exposing Kevin more to the virtual Baha'i world, and am wondering if there is an appropriate place in Bahaikipedia to add artist information. Perhaps there could be a category for Baha'i Artists? Please let me know what the best step to take would be. Thank you! ~Dance.ls 14:02, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Dance.ls. Some time ago there was an attempt to bring a whole series of articles about Baha'i artists to Bahaikipedia, see Category:Artists. If you would like to continue the development of that section of Bahaikipedia you are more then welcome. I see that Kevin Locke has an article on Wikipedia, I'll bring that over here sometime soon. Warm regards, David 14:07, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

May I get a daily email from you regarding a Bahai figure just like the one on your main page?
Thanks,
Donna Khandan Hosseini
- That is a great idea Donna. Unfortunately I don't have the system in place to manage something like that, and and we would run out of people to feature very quickly. I do try and put interesting things up on our Facebook page though: Bahaikipedia so feel free to check that out. Take care! David 01:08, 12 January 2011 (EST)
reposting of one of the main page "Featured" stories (i.e., quote, individual, today in history,...)
Allah'u'Abha! I administer the website for our Cluster in Virginia (www.peninsulabahai.org) and I had an idea to make the site more interesting that would also bring attention to the Bahaikipedia project. The idea is to have a posting on the main page of our site that is a reposting of one of the Featured stories that are on Bahaikipedia. That way there would be a daily change in content on our page that would improve the site, and it would acknowledge the source being Bahaikipedia and provide a link to your site. What do you think of this idea? If you agree it is a good one, could you suggest how it could be done? I am relatively computer literate, but am self-taught in site maintenance, HTML, Java, etc. Thanks -Steve Scotti [email removed]
Baha'i History/Photos & Journaled Documentation
I created an account some time ago, but not until now am I in position to make a contribution. I have an extensive photo library and journal notes covering many Baha'i activities in many countries since 1965, and fairly well documented. I was able to retrieve my boxes of materials from years of storage, and recently completed 7 months of almost daily scanning in preparation for archiving, and to allow me ease of completing documentation. All materials were personally completed by me, but there are a few instances where someone may have given me a photo or other materials. These will noted and appropriately documented. I'm still trying to decide if Bahaikipedia is the proper source for my efforts. You seem to have progressed rather well during the relative short time of your existence, and your plans for further development seen appropriate. However, I'm also considering development a personal website to present these materials. However, that has some drawbacks, mainly, time, its design intensive, and lacks technical support.
I was concerned about copyright, but now I see that you have covered that quite well. Also, it seems that you are dedicated and possibly in this effort for the long term. It certainly would be an injustice if those contributing to your site at sometime would suffer website disruption of service. So, hopefully, you are now able to understands some of my concerns.
I will 'test' out your site for ease and flexibility of presentation (format, clarity, etc). But, from you, I would like response concerning the above and if you think Bahaikipedia is the proper venue for this undertaking.
Thank you.
- Hi Sandar,
- Your message is very exciting to me whether or not you decide to use Bahaikipedia as a platform to distrubute the material. I would suggest you put it in multiple locations and I know people who can help you with website development or technical questions in order to do that, me included.
- I have created separate websites for each aspect of material that can relate to the Faith. They are Bahaimedia and Bahaitext in addition to Bahaikipedia. On Bahaimedia I've been adding page scans for Baha'i News and Star of the West. I hope that gives you an idea of the scope of what I hope to do, eventually those will be complete and then the actual text will be on Bahaitext eg: Star of the West. On Bahaitext the goal is to format and make the text available and optimized for the web and web platforms. I see using Mediawiki as a way to do this since they, via wikipedia, will always be working to make that information available everywhere, and those of us who are running our sites on their platform get to take advantage of it. For that reason I'd suggest a Mediawiki platform should you decide to make your own site.
- A note on service disruption, it would certainly be regrettable but it is possible all this could disappear overnight. My goal for preventing that is to form a small team who have the technical information, ability and resources to manage it should something happen to me. Traditionally this is called a non-profit, which is our goal but we're not quite there yet. So I'd just suggest you keep everything in multiple locations. If you put it online with a license that allows us to use it also, we certainly will incorporate it. Also, Wikipedia allows you to make your own backups of the website, basically download everything on demand and eventually we will have that same functionality here. It allows anyone to fork parts or all of the project which is a great feature to have if the project is close to shutting down or going the wrong direction, etc.
- About being a permanent site. I will do everything in my power to make sure nothing is ever lost, and the sites are always available. It's not an option to take them offline, far too much work has been put into them already by far too many people. There are more than 10 unique sites but looking at statistics from the three main ones, we have close to 70,000 page edits and 7,000 files uploaded over the last 4 years.
- In short, we're not perfect, we're having a spam problem right now, but we're trying and we're going to keep on trying to make a great resource for people and we'd be honored to have another person help us in this. Again, I'm more than happy to consult you on starting your own site, to me it's so important to get the material online for people to access that streamlining it can come later. David 06:44, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
No changes; I am merely asking for general permission to quote from your database.
Hi!
I am a Baha'i and am creating a list/database of figures and locations from the Dawnbreakers for westerners. May I use some of your biographical material? If yes, how should I credit you?
Thanks very much.
Warm regards,
Tim McLane Baha'i from Los Angeles [email removed]
- Sure Tim, anyone can take anything from Bahaikipedia without permission. The only requirement is attribution which usually just means a link back to the source of the content. David (talk) 19:02, 6 June 2014 (UTC)
One Common Faith wiki
Hello. My name is David Brown and I am a Baha'i in Canada. I had an idea to create a wiki entitled "One Common Faith". The idea would be a wiki dedicated to the independent investigation of truth. We often think of all of the differences between religions. The purpose of this wiki would be to show all of the similarities and progressive nature of religion. It would be organized in subject areas and quote what the various religious texts have to say about the subjects. (Very important to link the sacred word) I was hoping it could have a forum linked to each subject area so that people could have an open and respectful discussion about the various subjects. I have no experience contributing to a wiki but I thought it may be the ideal vehicle for an initiative like this. The links to the other religions of the world are incredible but if we all work together I think we could create something wonderful for all seekers after truth. We all know only one small part but when we put these parts together we can have a much more wholistic understanding. Would there be any way to leverage the efforts and experience you have already made with this wiki? Thank you.
- Hi David, I'm also David :) Of course I can help you with your idea, either through guidance or by setting up a platform for you to work off of. I want to warn you that wiki's have some significant weaknesses and they are mostly in the area of facilitating discussion. Wiki's are terrible forums because they weren't designed to facilitate discussion. If you want a forum for discussion there's no better one than reddit, you can make your own subreddit like reddit.com/r/onecommonfaith where contributors can discuss the topics you're interested in. You might even find that the subreddit's discussion forum sufficient to meet the goals of your project. For example, you can make a post and below that post will be all the discussion about it. What it doesn't do organically is allow for multiple people to contribute to an article before submission. Another advantage of using reddit is that the audience which is already there may find your subreddit and contribute where they never would on an independent site. If you go that route, and don't know about reddit already, it's a very secular site, so you won't find wide support from the generality of users. For an example of an active religious subreddit go to reddit.com/r/bahai
- If you think wiki's are going to be important for your mission then let me know and we'll talk more specifically about them. One of the biggest challenges you'll find no matter the platform you use will be getting others interested in participating with you. If you have an answer to that, then you're more than half-way to a successful site. David (talk) 00:14, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
I took a look at reddit and I don't think it will do the trick. It seems more like a post and one stream of comments. I think it will need multiple subject areas with an opportunity to comment. The wiki piece would be the sticky that is updated and modified to give the content of the discussions and then people could post their comments and have a discussion on the discussion page? I have some knowledge but I really hope to leverage the knowledge of everyone else out there as well which is why I was thinking of a wiki. Sort of like a one stop shop of how all of the religions are linked and have very similar spiritual messages. As for other people participating, this is always a challenge. It will be a great place to connect and share with other seekers so I hope this will be attractive. Your lessons learned on this would be great. Thank you,
- You can try of course, but you'd probably find wiki's turn out to be poor facilitators of discussion, even if there is a separate page for it. One reason is that formatting is not done automatically. Your name for example isn't attached automatically to anything you say, so on a discussion page nobody would know who is saying what. New threads that are replies aren't indented to show that one person is replying to another, etc. You'd probably want to use traditional forum software if your goal is discussions, so you don't have to educate every new contributor first. Do you know of any websites that exist today and are doing something similar to what you want? You might look to them as an example. Check out also drupal since it's a good cross-purpose platform having many components of wiki's and discussion forums both. David (talk) 01:27, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
This is great feedback and advice. Thanks. I have read a little about Drupal which lead me to hearing about Wordpress and joomla. I will look into these to see if they might be better options. I have not seen anything quite like what I am looking for but I will continue to explore. Thank you. David
