The Asia Teaching Committee of the United States was a body formed by the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States in 1953. It was responsible for pursuing the goals of the Ten Year Crusade relevant to Asia assigned to the United States and organizing efforts to teach the Bahá’í Faith on the continent.[1]
History[edit]
At the opening of the Ten Year Crusade in 1953 the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States established the Committee and appointed seven members. Goals set for the committee at the opening of the Crusade were[1]:
- To establish the Bahá’í Faith in the following territories
- Dutch New Guinea
- Caroline Islands
- Tonga
- Hainan Island
- Macau
- Sakhalin Island
- Tibet
- Kazakhstan
- To consolidate the Bahá’í Faith in the following territories
- To establish the following National Spiritual Assemblies in the following regions
Another goal of the Ten Year Crusade was to produce Bahá’í materials in forty Asian languages.[2]
By October 1953 the Asia Teaching Committee reported it had received many volunteers in response to its request for pioneers, however it was found that securing permission to emigrate to many of the territories was difficult. The Committee had been able to begin to collaborate with the Bahá’í communities of Japan, Formosa, Korea, and the Philippines on producing and translating Bahá’í literature and making teaching plans.[3] In 1955 the Committee reported that introductory pamphlets had been published in nine goal languages.[2]
After the close of the Ten Year Crusade in 1963 the Committee was disbanded and incorporated into the International Goals Committee.[4]
