1897 was a common year of the Gregorian calendar and a common year of the Julian calendar, the 1897th year of the Common Era (CE), the 97th year of the 19th century, and the 8th year of the 1890s decade. As of the start of 1897, the Gregorian calendar was 12 days ahead of the Julian calendar, which remained in localized use until 1923. 1897 corresponds to the years 53–54 of the Bahá'í Era (BE) according to the Badi calendar.

  • Mírzá Áqá Ján breaks the Covenant.
  • February: Six Bahá'ís are arrested in Mamaqán, Ádharbáyján. Three are bastinadoed and three are imprisoned in Tabríz.
  • May 21: Lua Getsinger becomes a Bahá'í in Chicago.

  • Shaykh Muhammad-Riday-i-Yazdi, Hand of the Cause, dies while imprisoned in Tehran.
