Bahá’ís first lived in Wichita, Kansas, in 1902. That year two letters were sent from ‘Abdu’l-Bahá to the believers in Wichita. Both of those individuals had moved on by the time the letters were received.
The next Bahá’ís known to live in Wichita pioneered there from Topeka in 1935. They stayed until 1946 when they moved on in discouragement. The next year the first Wichita resident accepted the Faith of Bahá’u’lláh, because of a book the pioneers had placed in a library. The present Wichita Bahá’í community dates from this time.
The first Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Wichita was formed in 1955, but it was able to function only one year. The next Assembly was elected in the early 1960s and incorporated a few years later.
In 2002 construction was completed on the Wichita Bahá’í Center. Earlier a commercial facility had been used briefly in the 1970s as a Center, but this building was designed for use as a center. It contains a meeting hall, classrooms and kitchen.
