West Haven is a city in the U.S. State of Connecticut located in New Haven County.
A Bahá’í community was established in West Haven in the late 1930s however it was unable to be consolidated in the 1940s and has remained small with less than nine Bahá’ís residing in the city.
History[edit]
In 1936 the secretary of the Local Spiritual Assembly of New Haven, Edward Kamerzel, was living in West Haven,[1] and in 1939 an organized Bahá’í Group for West Haven, independent of the New Haven Assembly, was established.[2]
The West Haven community was able to establish a Local Spiritual Assembly in 1940 which was the second in Connecticut after New Haven,[3] however teaching efforts struggled in the 1940's and in 1946 the community was in need of pioneers with the Assembly lapsing that year and continuing as a Bahá’í Group.[4][5]
In 1980 the New Haven Local Spiritual Assembly set itself the goal of assisting West Haven in re-establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly,[6] however by 1993 there were just four Bahá’ís in the city.[7] In 1993 the National Teaching Committee made establishing a Local Spiritual Assembly in West Haven a goal of the American Bahá’í community,[8] but there were only three Bahá’ís in the city by 1995.[9]
